Unhappy Restricted Performance - Jaguar XJ8 - 2010

Hello Everyone,

My Self Vijay. I live in Doha, Qatar. Recently I have purchased a pre owned Jaguar XJ L 2010 V8 model run for 89000 KM. One week later I have started receiving a error message on the dashboard saying "Restricted Performance" and the car is not accelerating properly after that. Also I have started to get petrol smell around the car.

Could you any one let me know what would be the possible issue and what can be done to fix this.

Thanks for the help.

-Vijay

Welcome to the forum and Jaguar XJ ownership. I'm sorry your initial experiences have not been so great.

First - you must stop driving the car in its present condition. Modern automobiles have self-protection modes that notify the driver and limit further damage. Don't ignore warning lights or messages. There are expensive bits in your car that will be ruined if you continue operating the car.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can purchase rudimentary diagnostic tools that might give you more information about your car's condition. Some of these are relatively inexpensive and attach to your smartphone. These are of limited use unless you can perform your own maintenance.

By clicking on the "Community" tab above, you can search members. There are five active members in Qatar. Ping each of them and ask where they obtain service for their car. There are also four Jaguar dealers in Qatar. Contact the one closest to you. You are going to require their services eventually, so might as well start now.

I agree above.
There are something wrong in the car. Most economic to sort it out asap.
Smell of petrol, when engine is running, could mean that not all gasoline are burning. No spark in one or more cylinders, flooding injector or just blocked airfilter / error in airflow measuring.
I hope you get it sorted out.

Thank You for the advice Vasara. I will start with getting the spark plugs replaced first and then see if that fixes the issue else I will get the airflow and fuel injector checked.

"Diagnosis by Replacement" is usually a very expensive and frustrating experience. These cars can be interrogated with the proper tools employed by skilled mechanics. If spark plug number 5 is malfunctioning, the computer will say so. If you replace all of the spark plugs and the problem is not solved, you would move on to another area. By doing so, you may ruin the brand new spark plugs you've just replaced. Around and around you go. Modern vehicles are far too complex to respond to "let's try this, and see if it works".
Take the car to a mechanic who has the tools and knowledge to fix it. Also, you have one of the very earliest of this model, one with several design flaws that may or may not have been fixed by previous owners. This same mechanic knows what these are, and will give you a report on the condition of the entire car.

Yes you really need to get the error codes from the car. Things are just too complex these days for a simple parts change to work.
Jaguar has the SDD which is the factory diagnostic software. But there are other systems that can work.

It does not sound like you can DIY the repairs?
If not I am afraid a 11 year old Jaguar will be an expensive car to own.

Symptoms sound like fuel injectors which are essentially issues of normal maintenance on this car. But you need to pull codes to find out. I'm not sure why spark plugs would result in a fuel smell.
