Default Shift into neutral without power

My 2012 XJL recently had a dead battery and also couldn't be jump started. The tow truck driver had a hard time getting it out of my garage because we couldn't figure out a way to shift the car into neutral without the car being powered on.

Is there a way to shift it into neutral without any power?

I seem to recall reading something about this in the owner's manual-have you read the manual? I too have a '12 XJL. If I come across it I'll again respond to your message.

That's almost exactly what happened to my car. One AAA and 2 Jag roadside assistance guys came out and couldn't jump start the car. A flatbed wouldn't work because we couldn't get it out of my garage. It finally took a resourceful tow truck guy with a fork like lift for the front wheel and a dolly for the back wheels to get the car to the dealer.

I tried looking up in the manual and didn't find anything and the dealer, the roadside assistance rep on the phone, nor the tow truck guys knew how to shift it into neutral.

I'll have to check it out in the XJL to see if there is a similar lever in the console.

Thanks.

Sounds like such a common occurrence that it's probably worth practicing the procedure in case you ever need to know how to do it!

Here is the procedure to 1, open the trunk and 2, to jumpstart. Hopes this helps us all.

Let me know mate if this works for the XJ, since the article describes the procedure for an XF. Cheers!

Do you know what caused the dead battery?

In the x351 XJ, lift up the floor of the center storage compartment to find the release lever. I think this is documented in the FAQ thread here somewhere.

I tried looking for ways to get under the center console but couldn't find a way.

No idea why the battery died; I drove it the night before without any issues.

Thanks for responding re battery. And, did you lock the automobile when you drove it the night before? I'm wondering if it's not locked if that might cause a battery drain. I noticed shortly after getting my XJL and when I didn't lock it a reminder would appear saying the battery is low--that reminder might have been just for the key fob but not sure.
