Sliding Cover Over Cupholders
Stuart, did you have any success gluing the old sliding cover together? I know you bought the new one, but I can't seem to get one in UK and I am wondering whether to attempt the repair. I don't want to risk damage by taking the console apart if the repair isn't do-able. Thanks
If I can do it, you can, too. Really, it's not difficult. I'm not a car technician, but I know which end of the screwdriver goes into the screw. Just get the trim removal tools and follow the detailed instructions in my post #17, above.
Good luck!
Does this mean Jaguar will replace at no cost?
The slat repairs didn't look perfect and didn't last, as other slats fell off. The factory adhesive must have been defective. If you want your XJ to look right, you should replace the cupholder assembly, which includes the sliding cover. See my post #12, above, for my parts source.

I have to back up Stuart S on this one too!
I was working on a different car but same type of sliding cover. Just no way to repair it properly and replacement is the only answer.
Hate to throw away so much stuff but as you know things are just NOT designed to be repaired anymore. It's one and done.

My parts source was SNG Barratt, a Forum sponsor. They're headquartered in the UK, with branch offices in the USA, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

P.S. It's still available.

I spoke to SNG Barratt this morning. Jaguar has told them they don’t know when this will be coming back into stock. Hence resorting to the second hand market. I may just have to attempt the repair. I have the webbing strap completely out and I have all of the slides. Presumably it is just a case of finding a super strength glue?

The OEM Jaguar part I bought was embossed with "Made in Germany". See my Post #14, above. I'm leery about a Chinese copy that might not fit ot last long. Parts are in short supply because of COVID. That cupholder assembly is a current item that should be back in stock. Contact the UK Jaguar Customer Experience Center.

You are, of course, quite correct. I will try the Experience Centre when it opens on Monday, but if Barratt are to be believed, they are out of stock. As a matter of interest, it was very difficult to find an actual 'phone number for Jaguar to call to find the part. I would have though that Googling "Jaguar Parts" would have done the trick. Who would have though of "Jaguar Experience" for a spare part. Your link is very helpful!
P.S. I must admit that I though this must be from the factory that manufactures the part. It is quite mind boggling to think that they can sell enough to pay for the tooling and manufacturing costs, Surely they cannot sell more than a few dozen at most?
Well, I called the Jaguar Experience Centre and they passed me on to a dealership who advised that these are not in stock and are on back order, which is pretty much what Barratt said. The dealership of course have no knowledge of the ones on offer by Aliexpress, from China, so I guess its a case of taking a punt on the Chinese one, waiting for ??? months to see if they come back in, or attempt a repair. Suggestions on a postcard please.... . . .
The best fix is to replace the cupholder assembly, but since they're not in stock I would do the least expensive alternative - the DIY repair.
I repair it using a clear epoxy adhesive. Why epoxy? It adheres to most types of plastic surfaces, and a thin application produces a high strength bond.
This should be easy and inexpensive.
I'd call that dealer and see if they'll accept your order, even though it's on backorder.

It may be from china and it may be OK? Have you contacted the sellers on Aliexpress? I am always very leery of anything chinese but have been surprised at what I have purchased. It's not terribly expensive either. I took a chance on the big Android screen conversion for my XJ and it's worked fine and at about $1000 I was more than a little nervous when I sent the money!
See if they will respond. You may be surprised.

You're from "home", wherever that is, and how you spend your money is up to you. But ...
I no longer buy anything made in China unless I really need it and there is no other choice. Why? Because I am a veteran

Hello, Stuart. Although I have owned various Jaguars over many years, I am brand new to this forum and may not have filled in the “Profile” section properly, but FYI I live in Sussex, England. I currently have my XJ as a daily driver, and an XKR. Other cars are a1936 Armstrong Siddeley, a 1949 Riley RMC, a 1953 MG TD and a 1961 MGA. All made in England!
I admire you standing up for your beliefs. However, from my perspective I am just trying to source a part for my car, and it seems the only place that might have it is in China. I will try the repair first, simply because of the uncertainty surrounding such a distant purchase.
As a matter of interest, though, as I said earlier, I find it hard to believe that this complex cup holder unit would be made as a copy. Surely they can’t sell enough of them to warrant the tooling and set up, which leads me to surmise that this may be where Jaguar is sourcing them now. If this is the case, whenever you buy a new car might you not unwittingly be buying parts from China?

PS.
In response to an earlier post I have asked the Aliexpress supplier for some details about the unit and when doing so I noted that the seller satisfaction rating is lower than average, so given this and my natural reticence to buy from so far away, it is unlikely that I will proceed.
