Soft close doors on a XJL

I picked up a 2014 XJL last week and can confirm that the driver's-side door does have the soft-close feature. In fact, after reading your post this morning, I just went down to the garage and tested it again just to make sure I wasn't mistaken.

Part of the soft close door capability are special vents in the rear fenders which help "decompress" vehicle body interior air pressure when closing the doors. I agree with MadManOfBethesda that the driver's door definately does have the soft close feature. To confirm it, just test any other XJ model on the dealer's lot. Boy, it simply boils my blood when dealer personnel fabricate outright lies, and I would let them know it in no uncertain terms.

My 2011 XJL has this feature; are you sure yours doesn't? OOPS, my mistake; I just learned soft close mean power assisted, and my 2011 are not power assisted; they are just extremely easy to close and latch.

I just purchased a 2014 XJL . The driver's door soft close was not working. I took to the dealer and it was a simple fix. A connector in the driver door jamb had loosened. Now the driver door has soft close, and the other 3 close with even less effort, since the pressure is now set as it should have been.

Same here with 2014
I also just purchased a 2014 XJL and the driver's door does not soft close although all the others do. I will have them check it when I pick up my plates from the dealer, but will definitely make note of the comments here. Glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this.

I asked my tech about the driver door soft close and he said that as part of PDI they have a connector that is in the right rear fuse panel in the trunk that needs to be connected to enable the driver door soft close. That is because in transit they don't want any chance of a battery drain and damage prior to a dealer completing the PDI.
Of course this applies to 2014 and later XJs and it makes one wonder if your dealers techs have been properly trained.

Driver's soft Door Close
All 4 doors have soft close doors. The driver's door comes disconnected from factory. To connect, simply open the trunk and open the fuse panel on the right hand side. Down in the bottom of that fuse panel you should see the connectors. Plug them together and you're ready to roll. This was on my brand new 2016 XJ.

My previous Lexus LS460 had soft close doors and it drove me nuts whenever a passenger got in and slammed the door. That car was so tightly sealed that slamming the door almost imploded my eardrums! Even though I reminded others to not slam the door, they frequently forgot because their cars didn't have that feature.
I thought I'd miss not having soft close doors on my 2013 XJ, but I don't because the doors close so easily as johndalheimer mentioned.

The only reference to soft close doors that I found in the online 2014 Owner's Handbook is on page 4:
"While a door is open, the locking latch is exposed. Do not attempt to manually close the latch as it may also automatically ‘soft close’ and trap items or body parts."
The first page of this Forum has a "sticky" titled "handbook download". For details, see my post #21: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...d-66380/page2/ I think the soft close feature is more likely to be described in the 2014-up Sales Brochure and, of course, in the Repair Manual that is available on TOPix for a fee.
