On my 03 S type, you just hold down the volume button and then the AVC numbers appear from 1-5. By turning the volume knob left or right, increases/decreases the numbers and thus the level of sensitivity of volume to speed. Somewhere in one of the posts, the lowest number setting selected made the least volume adjustment and the highest number setting selected, the greatest volume adjustment. But I can't prove that.

My problem is no matter what number I select, I can't seem to hear a difference. If I turn it off or on, it seems the same? Confused here. Would this possibly mean that the speed sensors are not working? Or is there some other adjustment needs to be made before it works? Any helps would be appreciated.

Wasn't aware that we had speed sensing volume control -I'll look into it. Keep in mind though that we have HD radio - which means that when the radio plays a HD channel, the volume gets a bit louder and if it losses the HD signal, the same song continues in standard radio but the volume drops.

That doesn't make sense - it should work for all audio

Mine seems to do this on radio and CD. Sure would like to know how to turn this off.

Unlike every other car I have driven with this "feature" there are no means to adjust or disable the speed/volume feature in the XJ. The XJ is so quiet that I find myself manually adjusting the volume back down when driving then having to turn it back up when stopped.

Failing to allow user adjustment of this feature is one of the engineering omissions that hopefully will be addressed with a future software update. Omissions that software cannot help are the lack of a good place to keep sunglasses and no power port on the dash to plug in a radar detector or other windshield mounted device.

When you first put gear selector into reverse radio will get a lot lower, then return to normal. When I drive it does seem like there is a speed sensor for radio volume but I have asked two different tecs and both say it does not have it. I find that the HD setting makes the radio volume go up and down alot. I have tried to turn HD off but since a software upgrade a few weeks back it keeps switching back to HD no matter how many times I turn it off. Brought it to dealer with other stuff to fix and got the usual from them "worked fine when we had it in here"

Thanks for that because I had completely forgot about the Audyssey MultiEQ because there are no setting adjustments in the menu system.

When you turn off HD radio it stays off until you turn the car off, when you start the car again the HD radio will be back on, there is no way to permanently turn it off. It's only meant for you to turn it off when you have weak reception to avoid having it switch back and forth constantly.

if you think the dynamic volume control isn't working properly there is a calibration program that can be run with the IDS by your dealer that may fix your problem

I do not have this feature in my car but wish I did. Previous BMWs I've owned had it and I find it very useful. I've had the car in for service twice recently and asked about having this feature enabled, but have been told by the dealer it does not exist.

So for now, I drive with my right fingers on the round v/c knob in the center stack, raising it as speed builds, then lowering it as I slow down. Not very automatic.
