Default There goes the water pump

So, I was driving yesterday and started seeing smoke/steam from the exhaust..pull over and I see coolant leaking. Towed to dealer...quote is 1600.00 to fix. I think I am already ready to say bye bye...car with under 40k and the water pump goes...crazy. I know it's a common issue after reading on here but REALLY.

39k miles.

Save $1,000+ and buy the water pump on Amazon and have it installed by an indy mechanic.

Unfortunately, I don't have time as I am driving down to FL in a few days so I had no choice but to let them do it.

I see the new model of the pump part on Gaudin Jaguar for 166.00.

WATER PUMP for 2011 Jaguar XJ

I hope this dissatisfied feeling goes away as I am now thinking about just selling the car when I get back to FL and buying something else while I'm there.

Clearly this is a fairly common failure, maybe due to bad selection of supplier by Jaguar. If the servicing has always been done on time and by a Jaguar agent, I would ask Jaguar for a contribution. Things like this are bad publicity for them.

Update: I called Jaguar Customer Relations after typing this post and told them all about this and how I own a mercedes s550 and s600 and I took the plunge and went over to jaguar's flagship model and flew from maryland to florida to buy it from a jag dealership, etc etc etc and she just kept apologizing. I told her I just got the oil changed a few days ago at the dealer, not because it needed it but because after the drive from MD I wanted to be proactive and have it done anyway.

She wanted to know where I bought it and what dealer the car is at now, the vin number, etc. She is going to call the dealer and said she will work something out with them...so we'll see.

She said she'll have an answer for me by Monday and I told her the car is currently being fixed as we speak and will be ready tomorrow by 5pm and she said she will call them today or tomorrow before 5pm...I wonder what she is going to say to them....

JagGuyMD,

At $1600 less parts (pump, hoses, coolant, belts, etc.,) - my guess $600 max - that leaves $1,000 for labor. I can't imagine it would take an experienced tech more than 4 hours from start to finish to replace a water pump, so that's $250/hour. My dealer's hourly service rate is $120/hour.

I could be way off on my estimate. Nevertheless, ...

I'd have a serious talk with your dealer about being overcharged. Maybe that's why Jaguar Customer Relations was so apologetic and told you that she would work something out with the dealer. Hopefully, she works out another bodily orifice for that dealer for taking advantage of you. Nothing beats getting screwed and not having any fun. Just my

Oh, don't worry. I am going to see exactly what's being charged. I do everything myself on my benzs and other cars but due to the time crunch is the only reason I took it there. He said the water pump, and the hose or something connecting to that and another part is where it was leaking and the said he pressure test, diagnostic fee, etc but I will find out tomorrow.

WOW! That is all I can say about Jaguar's customer service. They are paying for the entire cost of labor and parts and my car will be ready in about an hour. This is GREAT! Now I'll just use that 1600.00 and apply it towards the mods I wanted to do anyway!

Merry Christmas!

JagGuyMD,

Now you've been hooked! Customer service doesn't get any better than that.

Just try to get MBZ or Lexus to fully cover an out-of-warranty repair. My experience with both brands (SL600 and LS460) is "... are you kidding me?"

I would say he got lucky, how many people have been told get lost when their pump dies outside of warranty a lot. Of those some of them had their engine gernade and again jag says get lost even though it is a very well known design flaw with at least three redesigns over the last four years.

I am happy to see they stepped up and did the right thing in this case but there a lot of people that were not as lucky.

I haven't heard a word from Jaguar, even though I am the world's foremost authority on automotive coolant pump mechanical face seals that cause such premature failure, and how to eliminate them. Don't you love it?
