Default Tires

Hello all

I bought a used 2011 xj few months.
Tires need to be changed.. Front.
Might do the rear at the same Tim. It's got only 38k miles and the dealer tells me the oem tires have worn out.

Any suggestions? Which ones to buy that last longer. My drive is normal.. Home to work on Highway.

Also for winter tires.. Are they only for winter or can be driven all year round.
We live in Baltimore.
Thank you

Most of the folks here have switched to Continental DWS (Dry/Wet/Snow) tires from the OEMs, while some have stuck to the Pirelli P Zero Nero OEM tires, and others have gone for other tires.

I had the Pirellis when I bought my car but they were crap when they started to wear slightly and so I replaced ALL of them around the 12,000 mile mark. I switched to the Continentals and I have never looked back since...I love them. They handle really well and are much better from a ride perspective, but I will say that I hear more road noise from them as compared to the Pirellis. The road noise does not bother me at all (I actually like it), but I just wanted to let you know.

My dealership matched the price from Tire Rack, so I replaced all 4 of them for approx. a grand, installed.

Btw, I have had the opportunity to drive them on snow, with the Winter Mode enabled, and while they were leap years ahead of the Pirellis (which were absolutely pathetic in the extreme cold and snow), they are certainly not Winter tires. Thankfully I live here in NC so don't really need Winter tires.

Hope this helps.

I have Yokohama tires on all my cars and they're great -- smooth, quiet, good handling in all weather. Anyone else like them?

Plus, right now until 8/31, Yokohama is running a "Summer Joyride" rebate. I just mailed in my rebate coupon

Cheers,
Wolfy

I switched to the Continental Extreme Contact DWS early on, and found them far superior to the Perelli P Zero Nero OEM tires in all respects: i.e. superior hydroplaning resistance, wet traction, ride comfort, noise comfort, longer life and less unsprung weight, plus they came with a 50M mile warranty and lifetime road hazard replacement.

Thank you liquidice, wolfy and John for your input.
One question was.. Are winter tires only for winter or can be done all the year a round.

Thanks

I'm on Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3's, which I like but don't love. They handle well in all weather, they're just a little loud for my taste and haven't worn very well.

If you're not worried about snow, I highly recommend seeing what street tires the Autocross guys are using in a given season. They'll somehow find the best bang for buck tire imaginable and often tire companies will make a model specifically for them. I ran Falken Azenis RT615's on my 2001 M5 and they were both cheap and absolutely fantastic tires: amazing grip, good wear, zero noise.

I'm going to move to bigger wheels, but if I was staying on 19's I'd be looking at the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs. I'll likely go with Hankook Ventus V12s instead.

Nope, Winter tires are meant only for the Winter...they will wear very quickly when used in the other seasons.

Likewise, Summer tires will be crap in the Winter...they can't handle the cold weather, much less snow/ice.

So either you get Summer AND Winter tires and swap them as needed, or just All-Season tires like the Conti DWS ones.

Agreed, but he Summer tires will still be crap anytime the temperature gets below 45 degrees or your driving in moderate to heavy rain, and the Winter tires will still wear very quickly, and probably be noisy any time your not driving on packed snow. That is why All-Season tires like the Continental Extreme DWS are so popular.

If you could afford an old 4 X 4 truck, either small or large, just to drive when snow is on the ground that's the route I would travel. You also run the risk of rust appearing sooner on the Jag if driven during winter and all of the rock salt/etc on the roads.
My 4 X 4 truck is a '99 w/ 156,000 miles and it's in good shape but when snow is on the ground, none of our cars are driven, just the truck.
Good luck w/ whatever you decide.

Do you still like the Continental tires?

I have 25,000 miles on my xjl. Not sure what the brand of tires is.
The tires are ok. Fronts need replacement.. I would probably replace all four.
I live in Milwaukee, WI.
With snow season approaching, I thought it would be safer to put a new set of tires.
I don't plan to buy snow tires.

Research tells me that Continental tires are a good choice.
I had continental contipro contact on my XF and they lasted about 25,000 miles.

For my xjl, I am debating between the non run flat: ExtremeContact DWS 06 ($940 delivered from tire rack) Tread wear rating 560

Vs the Run flat ProContact GX SSR ($1334 delivered from tire rack) tread wear rating 500

I am not too concerned about the $400 difference.

Is there a difference in ride, tread wear etc? I noticed that both had high enough tread wear rating.
Ride issues?

I am not sold on the need for run flats. I did have a couple of flats over the years.
One was a terrible one.. which my son had in a bad neighborhood in the middle of winter.

The rest were not too bad..

Typically, the tpms gives good enough warning.. but I am not sure..

Any opinions/suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks.
