Looking to buy a 10 reg XX portfolio with 158 k miles on it,
whats your thoughts please

I wouldn't be particularly worried by the mileage provided it is backed up with evidence of scheduled servicing at the correct intervals. On a Jaguar averaging 15K miles per year means this will be on a time elapsed basis of every 12 months. Also no Jaguar is going to get that far without additional repairs and replacements so there should be a fat file of bills.

Beyond that, bodywork and trim condition need serious scrutiny. Parts are expensive so an attractive purchase price doesn't necessarily convert into a low cost ownership experience.

If it's a cheap car with history, it's worth a serious look. If it's a cheap car with no history, I'd go over it with a fine tooth comb or walk away.

Thanks Graham for reply, that was my thoughts it has quite a comprehensive file quite fat with full service history, Jaguar at that, I was going for a 16 reg one but feel for my firstJaguar feel it’s low risk to see if I enjoy the car, can justify the running costs etc and get it into my system.
good tip I got off this site was to look at the sun roof runner for rust and sure enough it was there so a good negotiation point lol

 

I see from your IP Address you're in Glasgow. I haven't been keeping up with UK used XJ prices but had a look on Autotrader to see what's available. You can certainly get a lot of car for very little money at the moment. Follow the usual advice with any used Jaguar - if in doubt, walk away. There's plenty to choose from.

I was in a similar situation and undecided on an XF or XJ. I decided to try it out with a 2012 and loved the car BUT if I had it all over to do again.
I would have started with a 2016 and up.
BIG difference and if it was my money, I would definitely skip the 2010 and go straight for the 2016.

 

Thanks for the input, big difference what way? Bit more info would help me understand a little more
for interest the model I looking at was an x demo car with quite a few extras

 

If they updated the timing chain tensioners and the cooling system routing to the newest parts, then I’d say go for it. Otherwise I’d advise getting a 2014 or newer, preferably still under warranty.

A few of the BIG differences between the years:
2013-upword upgraded from 6-speed to 8-speed
2016 Infotainment center upgraded
2016 Upgraded J-Blade headlights
2016 rumored to have upgraded chain tensioner
2016 electric power steering
2013 adds small expensive 2nd battery for stop/start
2016-up deletes 2nd battery and uses capacitor for stop/start

Just to note that AWD models stuck with hydraulic assist steering, even after 2016.

yes does sound temping to steer clear, undecided now was swaying towards the older model so need to do some real thinking,
it’s just that the price was tempting that if I dint like it or thought the car to big whatever the risk was less, and it had a lot of toys for the money including dab radio and tv mmm decisions decisions

 

I believe 2016 was first year to do away with sticky buttons too. It may have also been the year the cooling system got rerouted. My understanding is that the tensioners were updated already by 2014 though.

Older cars are fine as long as you get rid of the issues that can lead to catastrophic failure. Newer cars will always have newer features but are also much more expensive. If you get a newer car get the longest warranty you can. If you get an older car get one with the most service history you can including timing chain tensioners/guides, water pump, and all coolant tubing replaced.

thanks for the reply, I here what your saying and this is why I raised the question as I knew this site would raise points for me to consider, like the question clubairth asked me, has now got me thinking!
what year would you consider going from 2016 onwards? That was my original thoughts but will be x2 expensive

 

I would get a 2016 but make sure the first “in service” date is in 2016 or later. This is the date the warranty clock started. IIRC it should have a five year warranty from the first in service date. Then I would try to get a CPO or get an extended warranty through the dealership. If you don’t DIY, it’s best to be under warranty.

 

For others reading this I did a huge amount of research and they did update everything in 2014 BUT it goes by VIN as Jaguar does not really change stuff based on year of production.
For the X351 XJ the Vin cross-Over occurred on VIN V58603. My 2014 XJR is in the V54000 range-Missed it by this much!
