Hi Iv had some recent problems with my Daimler. Coolant related after the top right rad pipe blew off. Iv done some research and I'm going to change the two thermostats and the pipes and clips.
Once this is done il be draining the coolant and flushing the system. I'm looking for info on the best way to flush, and also if this engine needs to be bled afterwards. Iv seen on a few forums that it does but the info match my car.
Hi Tom Murray. Welcome. Glad to have another DD6 owner on board. Top of the line vehicle you have there right?
Hopefully the radiator inlets are still in good condition. They are known to erode, as with any plastic tanked car.
The radiator drain is within the right radiator support donut at the bottom of the radiator, reachable from the front of the car.
Drain the system and slowly refill with distilled water with chemical flush cleaner in it. Run the engine for a bit, with the heater on. Drain when cool and repeat, or go to a water flush.
Flush with distilled water, with the engine cool, thermostats and hoses removed. Flush the radiator at both inlets this way too. Flush the heater core separately via a heater hose, as the main flush flow will probably not reach through the core from the thermostat housings at the front of the engine. Lots of crud is known to collect in the core. Some will use a garden hose on low pressure for flushing, but keep in mind that about one gallon of this water will remain in the engine block, even with the lower hose disconnected. This is a good time to replace the lower hose too. It's not difficult, but make sure the pump connection is clean and smooth. Uro makes a pretty good lower hose. My last one went 8 years before weeping from the end of the branch connection. I'm pretty sure they are the only after-market hose maker for this car.
Slowly fill the system at the recovery tank. Recommend 60/40 coolant/water because of the flush water that stays in the block. It will take somewhere around 15 liters, or 4 gallons. Bleeding is simple as it is a "self-bleeding" system. Just put the heater controls on high, and run the engine with the radiator cap removed. Add more coolant if necessary after start up. Top off when cool. This bleeding method works well for the X305.
Welcome Tom you have joined a club with very few members. We look forward to hearing about your ride. SleekJag12 has covered all the bases on your coolant flush. But first we need pictures of your double six.

Thanks for the photos. I see it is very similar to Tcasmarcus's recent DD6 Century in Sapphire Blue, with chrome Turbine wheels and Cream interior. Lovely. Although I see yours is a short wheelbase model and a RHD of course. Very interesting.
Someone has made off with your engine cover and original wooden shift knob! Lots of options for a new knob, but the engine cover, not so sure. How are those fuel rail crossover hoses looking? Likely time for new ones. I documented the replacement I did last year in this thread.
Not to bad. Had an automatic transmission fault come on last night. Cleared itself now.
Had the rear bushes and frame work done this month. Goes in for paint work next year so I’m trying to tick off all the jobs. Needs a new roof lining. Wheels are leaking air. One wheel is missing a hubcap which I’m struggling to find.
New header tank to be fitted. Then il be changing and replacing all the fluids in the car.
I was browsing through the forum to pick up ideas for the 'new' DD6 I've just acquired and thought I'd take the opportunity to reply to this thread. I'm in New Zealand and have owned a '64 V8 Saloon for a couple of years and thought I should enlarge my fleet with a 'modern classic' so ....
Have a couple of local 'Daimler' nuts, one with an X305 DD6 Century and the other with an XJ40(?) DD6 Insignia (one off Signal Red)
It's a 1994 RHD with 92k kms and was originally delivered into Singapore, imported to NZ in 1999. Let me know what you think.
