Default Need advice - strange thump or thud

I am new to the Forum and have found it quite valuable. I have a recently purchased 1997 XJ6 VP. The car has 87K and has been a one owner car that received all major services. Having owned the car for one month; the car seems to be under-powered and has a strange thump or thud (can feel a surge coming from the rear of the car as if it is trying to move forward while my foot is on the brake pedal) that occurs when the car is running and in gear, but while stopped. Someone told me that it may be a compression issue or a failing head gasket? Wondering if this is accurate or could be something simple like incorrect timing, spark plug order or even the fuel injectors being fowled. Any suggestions on how to correctly identify and diagnosis this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
