Angry sunroof module

Hello, on my 1996 XJ12 my sunroof stopped working. I did a hard reset and it seemed to work fine for a few times. But it seems to be very intermittent or looses its' memory. How should I approach further diagnosis.Could the switch be the culprit? Thanks for any information. If anyone has had this problem please let me know the fix.

Sunroofs... if only it were that simple to enjoy some sunshine and a breeze thru the car from above.

A long-standing source of frustration for X300 owners. The mechanisms are prone to break when they get old like they are now, which means jammed, stuck. So if yours is not mechanically broken, only electrically, you are still ahead of the game.

The electrics are all above the overhead switch. You can take the overhead console down with the one thumbscrew under (above) the sunglasses holder. It should be straightforward to disconnect and test the switch. Check the sunroof fuse for good connection too. F18, RH heelboard, 15A.

Keep in mind the manual crank option: if it gets stuck open, there is a fitting for a hex wrench up there to manually close it.

It is advisable to lube the rails when the roof is open. I don't think the cable and pulleys are accessible to lube, they are above the headliner.

Search in the X300 section for sunroof malfunctions. Most of them are related to mechanical failure and jamming.

Thank you for the information.I have checked the switch and have the module in my hand.It must have been a problem for the last owner because it was zipped tied in.As I mentioned before, if I do a hard reset it will work for two or three times and then not. I am leaning toward the module but will check the fuse for corrosion etc.I am wondering if I should pop the top on the Module? Can you tell me if these modules by inalfa #9550526 are all the same ? There are quite a few spares on eBay.Thanks again

The factory used a zip-tie to retain the module!!!!!

Is the module set/timed correctly????

There are MANY TSBs for the sliding roof. ALL TSBs and repair procedures/parts are the same for the X300 and the X308 (They are the SAME units).

Great information ....I removed the module and looked closely.....and having checked the switch while the console and module were hanging and not in situ the roof worked flawlessly.I knew nothing about the timing issue but before I install it again I will follow the procedure. I wonder if the fact that the battery has been disconnected has confused the module? I am doing some maintenance on the engine and changing coolant hoses.Again thanks I will post when completed and have run it through some cycles.
