Hi, I am trying to get at the ignition coils on the right side of the engine to get at cylinder 3 so I can switch the coil between cylinder one and cylinder 3 to see if the misfire will move to cylinder one, and Im afraid to break anything, can anyone with photos help me with instructions, part of the wiring harness needs to be removed also, I dont wanna pull on it and break it, I do have the repair manual , all it says is ":remove",it dont say how, thank you all!
Personally, I wouldn't switch the #1 & #3 coil packs. Just purchase a new coil pack for the #3 cylinder (NAPA will have it), and be done with it. In all probability, a defective coil pack is what you have at the #3 cylinder. Be thankful that you're not having a problem with the #1 cylinder as driving the car would then be quite problematic. With a defective #3 coil pack, the car can limp along for months. I mean, I've been there.
You will have to remove the top engine shroud and the side panel in order to access the #3 coil pack on the passenger side. The side panel just pulls off, and the rest would be self explanatory. Actually, there are no metallic bolts to remove (except for the one that secures the #3 coil pack in place). In addition, be sure to securely attach the electrical connector to the new #3 coil pack. The electrical connector "should" plug in somewhat easy, but I had to "carefully" use a pair of channel locks when I had done it. Oh, when facing the engine, the #3 coil pack will be the 2nd one down on your left. Good luck!
With the time and age of your car don't be surprised if the clips for the coils break. They are plastic and that has been cooked for 20+ years now. So be gentle as you can here!
