Default 04 XJR Purchase Advice

Hello,

New member to the forums - and hope to be a new owner of an XJR soon....maybe even within next 24 hours if I can lean on you folks for some assistance.

I'm looking at an 04 XJR as follows:
  1. 89k Miles
  2. Lease vehicle
  3. Super clean inside/out
  4. no apparent paint work
  5. Unfortunately no service records
I think I can get the car for less than $16k

From searching on the forums - I can't seem to find any blatantly obvious thing to be concerned about but...I thought to ask.
  • What type of major service is upon me within next 5-10k Miles and approximated cost? (Suspension wear, tune up, preventative replacement ...etc...etc..)
  • What things should I be concerned about related to problems for this 1st year of XJR within this body style?
  • Anything else I should be asking the seller (independent dealer) about this car?
Ohh yeah...as this is a car I am being offered on ebay....so I have to make a response within 22 hours.

Thanks in advance folks!!

Hi I'm also new to this forum. You should request a Carfax report for the car. If they won't supply one you should be concerned as to why. If it is being sold on Ebay look at his feedback. If you can get the Vin# maybe someone here can run the warranty history for the car. Good luck but be careful. George.

I was given an Experian/AutoCheck and it's clean, no issues at all and the seller's feedback is 99.6% with 4,506 transactions ...I wonder if Jaguar can run a check - I might call the dealership and see what then can do with a VIN.

Or....anyone here able to do VIN checks via a Dealer?

Thanks for your advice.

Personally, I would pay a little more for a less mileage model with records. My first immediate concerns would be the air suspension and transmission.

Jaguar North America should be of some help.

I wouldn't buy one without driving it. You want to drive one that is cold and let the car warn up while driving. I have a torque converter problem and you can only feel it while the car warms up. Do a carfax too, both can have different data. You can call Jag with the vin number and they can give you the history of all work done in dealerships. I think it was 1(800)-4Jaguar. I found out mine was a lemon at 7K. I do beleive most of these cars do come off a lease. If you are only looking at pictures, don't trush them. Most pics will hide small blems and scratches. I got my for under 15K with 69,800 miles, but a lemon that had the ECU replaced.

I'll say it again, the '04s are the most unpredictable (current XJ), buy an 05 and up if you must.

I called the dealer - got to chat with a guy in service, gave him the VIN, and he said no active recalls etc..but no access to records that would be from another dealer...hmmm....

I did put a deposit down on the car today - when I return from travel/work this weekend I'm traveling a few hours to do the final inspection/purchase.

Maybe I'll try that 1-800 number and see if they can give me some more info on it.

A "cold run" will definitely be part of the final inspection criteria.

Thanks again - any more suggestions?

Very critical, make sure they do not move that car at all until you get there.

Well...went to pick up the 04 XJR today....and didn't....it had some new scratches, the rear tilt didn't work on the driver's seat....and a 1" puddle of water in the rear floorboard.....bad weather...but it just wasn't meant to be.....keep looking i guess.
