Default '05 XJ8 VP check engine light on

car has 60K miles, and I'm just wondering if anyone with more experience than me can speculate what this may be. Just had oil changed and transmission checked so what other engine sensor might this be?

Thanks!!

Patrick

Most likely due to an emissions issue. I would recommend getting an OBD II scanner and then getting the codes read. I got mine from Advantage Auto for around $40 or so. The OBD II port is on the right side of the driver's footwell. It's a bit awkward to get to. When I've had to use the reader I get on my knees to plug in the reader.

Hi Patrick,

My two cents is to go to AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto, NAPA, etc. and ask them to read the stored Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) that have triggered the Check Engine Light (CEL). They'll do it for free.

As carelm has observed, most of the codes that will trigger the CEL have to do with emissions, and by law they must be readable by a standard OBDII scanner.

However, on modern vehicles there are many other manufacturer-specific codes that are not readable by a standard OBDII scanner, so I would personally hesitate to recommend that you spend any money on one, unless it was one of the inexpensive ELM327 bluetooth models that work with the Torque Pro app that runs on Windows or Android phones. I think I paid about USD $5.00 for the Torque Pro app, and about $10.00 for my ELM327, which looks like this:

I don't know if there are equivalent devices and apps that will work with iPhones or Apple OS laptops.

To read any of the proprietary Jaguar DTCs, you'll either need to visit a Jaguar dealer, a good independent Jag specialist, or invest in the dealer-level diagnostic equipment yourself (search the forum for "Mongoose" and "SDD" ideas of what that involves).

All that to say, try your local auto parts store first for a free scan and make careful note of the stored code or codes (including the initial letter, which is important, such as C, P, B or U). Report back and we'll be happy to try to help.

Cheers,

Don
