Default 2003 X350 warning lights.

Just been for a long drive and an hour into trip all dash warning lights lit up, display scrolled through every warming, dials went to zero.
Stopped, restarted, just EML on. AA man connected, DTC said communication to cluster lost. Cleared error and continue on journey.
Three days later 2 hours into return same happened. Used my own OBD and Torque to clear error and all was well.
Any ideas? Peter.

That it CAN recover and run for "a while" - several days, even - shouts out intermittent electrical issue.

Damaged or wet & gone dodgy connectors or ground point more likely than cut, abraded, overheated or rodent-chewed wire harness.

Time to inspect, clean, (CRC, Ideal, 3M, etc.) manipulate connectors (to wipe oxidation/corrosion).

Check power and grounds, "most important" // AKA 'affects EVERYTHING" ones first. EG: start at the battery and terminals, work outward!

That you GET 'full recovery' even if briefly sez all the modules are "most probably" still good, but... failing solder joint, damaged PCB trace on a module's PCB is still on the 'possibles' list.

"With luck..." it's an internal fault in the battery, triggered by 1+ hours of exposure to wotever the underhood temps, alternator & its voltage regulator are doing or failing to do - overheating it one possibility, gradually dropping behind and not keeping-up Voltage another..

You might 'find' the cause just my checking Voltages during that sort of trip.

Any decent OBDC scan tool can 'also' read voltages, so no need of a partner perching on the bonnet at speed, nor of running your own Kelvin leads back to a vintage VOM!

Don't clear the codes till you've read them and noted all the details.

Most codes by law only flag if they occur under about the same circumstances twice (in a row, usually) in separate warm ups.

Would be worth your while to download the electrical schematic diagrams for your model.
Check CAN bus wiring and connector integrity from J-Gate through to the instrument cluster.
Also check CAN bus wiring integrity from instrument cluster to air suspension module. (the air suspension module also has the one of the two 120 ohm CAN bus system terminator resistors located at it).
Losing CAN comms from the J-Gate would isolate the instrument cluster and it would freak out giving all sorts of errors.
The same might occur if the air suspension module and 120 ohm terminator were missing from the wiring, as the CAN signals could become overly noisy due to the unbalance impedance on that section of the CAN bus.
