Unhappy 2004 X350 oil issue

I sent this hours ago but now cant find it> SO here again;;

we have a problem, The car was driving fine, then suddenly lost power and stalled, It started again but felt like it was running on 4 cylinders and kept stalling. The engine now is rattling as if there was no oil being supplied to it but the oil level is OK. The oil light goes of quickly on starting and takes a few seconds to light when the engine stops seems! Any Ideas ?

My only idea is to get it to a shop asap for an inspection, preferably one that specialises in Jaguars. If it were me, I'd get it trailered there.

It would be very unusual to have an oil supply problem, these engines are very long lasting. How many miles on the car, and when was it last serviced and the oil and filter changed ?

bonnettoboot, I've moved your post from the General Tech section to the X350 section where it will get more visibility and better response from folks familiar with the model.

+1 on Fraser's recommendation

Thumbs down

Hello Frazer, Nice Scottish name! Very unusual Is an understatement. I am a Shop, Bonnet To Boot, in Los Angeles, It originally crossed my mind that we had a lubrication problem, but dismissed it after seeing oil on the filler cap. There are codes, they say a problem with all cylinders but nothing else. I use Autologic and they can not help. other than checking fuel, timing issuse , I have removed the valve cover and can see scraching on the cams. removed the oil pan and it was strangely dark but with heavy yellowish screeks, Very odd, like something strange was put in the engine. I haven't as yet found a good schematic of the oil routing . Even more odd, the vehicle came in with strange suspension problems,no engine problems ? after some testing we took out the spare tyre to access the pump assy, There was at least an inch of water in the bottom, we then removed the Susp ECU, it hadb water stains on the outside, we opened it and found the same stains, we dried it out and we started to get responses from the suspension in fact we had repaired the suspension and I drove the car for a day or two and all was well. I called the owner and suggested she drive the car over the weekend. She did, within 20 minutes she was back, stuck on the street in front of the shop, I managed to get it in,. Naturally she was frustrated particularly as I had no idea of what had happened. This is a week later and she wants to take it to a dealer!! I'm thinking it might be the best thing as I'm not sure of where this will lead. Thank You, Bill

Yes., my name is a Scottish first (or Christian) name, but spelled with an 'S'. Of course in the USA, 'Z' is used very frequently where we British would use an "S". Interestingly when one finds an "S" in German it is commonly pronounced like a "Z", but not always. I am trying to learn German at the moment, as me and the wife like to holiday there. Easy it ain't !!

Q about the engine - any shiny metal particles in the oil ?

Some photos would be useful, but the car seems to have quite a lot of issues, and may not have been maintained very well. Note that not all the Jaguar codes can be read by some readers.

There is a Variable Valve Timing system (VVT) on the NA V8s, and this can sometimes go awry as I understand it. There is an oil control solenoid that can make a noise, I believe, as can the VVT unit if starved of oil, but if the oil pressure is low, a locking pin is supposed to click into position and lock the unit. Did you get an impression of a well maintained engine or not ?
