Default 2008 XJ VDP: ELECTRICAL ISSUES-Please Help

I have a 2008 XJ VDP with 67000 miles. About two weeks ago noticed a problem that the windows would not work. After about 30 minutes I discovered that once i adjusted the dimmer switch the windows would work. If i turn the dimmer switch all the way up it knocks out all the illumination in the car except the dash board. It also kills the windows

Also the buttons are not illuminating properly. If i am letting the window down and I open the door the window will stop working. When I put the car in reverse it knocks the light out on the radio and navigation buttons. Took it to the dealer and the tech said that it appears to be a networking issue.

Dealer states that would have to have the car a couple of days to find problem. He checked all the switches and switch packs and said they were fine. The dash board lighting is not affected. Has anyone seen or had this problem before

Bottom line is that electrical gremlins like you describe are virtually impossible to diagnose from a distance.

Due the usual:

Test the battery as these cars get real squirrelly with low batteries.

Get your hands on an electrical schematic from the download section and check all the ground locations that can possibly be connected to the lighting and switching system.

Quite often electrical gremlins that combine headlights and switches originate in the turn signal switch as it is the crossroads through which much of the electrical system must pass and with all the electronics in these cars and the way they all seem to intersect I'd be tempted to start in that area.

Hi g7162002,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!

I haven't heard of your specific symptoms before, but my first impression is that you have one or more shorts, either to ground or between power circuits, perhaps due to broken insulation on wires in a harness somewhere, or perhaps an internal problem in an electronic module.

You can download the 2008 Electrical Guide at the link below:

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Elec...al%20Guide.pdf

If you study the circuits for all the components that are misbehaving, you may find a common point where their wiring, power sources or grounds come together, which may help you find the problem.

Hopefully another member will have dealt with a similar gremlin and be able to offer some tips.

Cheers,

Don

thanks for the link. I'm really stumped on this one. The electrics are a little to complicated for me. I may have to return it to the dealer to fix it.
