Default 2008 XJ8 J-Gate shifter HELP!

Im lost. Went to replace shifter w/used unit, here.

Replacement shifter from E-bay. After instal w/engine running, wouldn't come out of park. Then I forced it and something snapped. I Had gears, but it wouldn't go back into park. I noticed the original shifter I removed had a different p/n on it, which I haven't a clue why. It looks like someone replaced it previously. The DOM.(00/00/00)doesn't make any sense to me, look here @ the one I'm replacing. I need a diagram To try to make one good shifter out of one. At present time, The ign. wont turn off. The battery discharged. I recharged the battery. What do I do now? I can't access the original shifter's insides, because I can't figure how to remove this tapered unit screwed on the shaft. I could use a diagram to understand this unit. I think when I yanked on replacement shifter after instal(that I feel as though someone put it together just to sell, and didn't do it right. Due to the removed tapered unit)I might of broke something inside that disc that spins, which relates to the ign. that it's in park, thus eliminating the ign. to turn off. I'm afraid to hook batt. up w/ign. in the on position. Can anyone help me please? I don't want to break anything else......CG.

Nothing easier than that. Unscrew the conical lock nut of the shifter knob upwards and loosen the 4 screws of the j-gate cover. Then you can remove the j-gate cover upwards and the solenoid and the pawl of the parking lock will be visible.

The ignition cannot be switched off because a gear is engaged in the transmission. A shift cable is attached to the right of the shift block. If you can manually shift it to P or N, you should be able to remove the ignition key.

The fault was probably that the shifter was not properly engaged in the gate that moves the cable.

Maybe all this is useless because it is two different parts from different vehicles, one from 2007, the other from 2013.

Jaguar belonged to Ford when the X350 was developed, and then Ford sold the company to Tata in 2008.

The original parts bore Ford part numbers, such as the one in your first picture: 2W93-7K004-AL
It makes researching parts in the Jaguar catalogue difficult, because in there you only find the parts often starting with C2C-.....

After 2008, the company was not allowed to use the ford part numbers anymore, so on the part from 2013 you find the part number that is also shown in the Jaguar catalogue: C2C-36038.
C2C-36038 is the current part number in the Jaguar catalogue, and it seems to fit all X350/X356/X358s from 2003 to 2009, so the two shifters should be identical.

Best regards,

Thomas

This conical lock nut.. How is it removed?
After removing cable from shifter I tried to move cable forward to park, then to netrual. The key will not turn off. Does the battery need to be connected? Is it safe to hook battery up when ign. is in the on position?

I'm aware of transfer of ownership. I know this because it has caused me difficulty. Also, my VIN. is; H20806. Looking for exploded view of this unit.

The conical lock nut can simply be unscrewed upwards by turning it counterclockwise like a normal nut.
Of course, the battery must be connected, otherwise the control unit will not recognize the position of the selector lever.

Since the ignition is on is not ideal, but should not cause any problems. First connect the plus cable, then the minus cable. Attach the minus cable pole quickly and without slipping to avoid sparking.

Looks like there is a grub screw on the conical part. Undo that and it should unscrew off.

engineering numbers have nothing to do with casual part numbers. all the shifters are the same don’t worry

ignition tumbler has american-proofing with cable interlock has to be in park
