I have an 04 X type, lovely car, it's the Estate (wagon) and have been toying with the idea of getting the 08 XJR as a summer driver.

I was at my local mechanic who only works on europian cars (I have a BMW X5) and he was working on an 04 XJR, had the whole top of the motor off. I asked him about the cars and his told me to stay clear of them. Said the motor was prone to head gasket issues, and he had spent more time working on especially the supercharged models that any other model.

I think he is a bit of a BMW bigot but that being said how are the motors especially the XJR motors with the blower?

 

Well, I believe you are in the wrong forum, but I gotta agree with the mechanic's point only from my personal experience, the only engine failure I have had in my XJR engine was a head gasket.

and don't worry about headgaskets, the 4.2 motor is a king of an engine, over 10 years development, I'd love a 4.2 supercharged engine to play with!
