Default Adding Additional IC Radiator

I was asked how I added my additional IC Radiator so will detail it here.

The radiator I bought was on Ebay and I believe it was taken out of a Ford Lightening as almost brand new.

It was taken out as a larger one was being fitted and I think this procedure is not uncommon.
So It was not designed for the 2005 XJR and I had to make modifications for it to fit.

I had to saw off a big bracket that went around the Lightening radiator.

Modified the Jaguar hood latch release by taking off the plastic handle leaver but still able to release the hood easily.

Had to take out the two air guides inside the grill which hold in the two metal
cross hatch grills. Used pieces of tubing cut and folded to secure those grills in place very securely.

I added an upgraded IC pump.

I was replacing many hoses at the time and used a good original hose to connect the new IC radiator.

Also added an adjustable thermostat to separately control the 2 six inch fans.

I used larger tie wraps to hold the fans in place and rubber feet that came with the radiator to help support it on the cross beam.

I also made sure that I could still access the tabs from the grill to press down and allow one to pull the grill out.

I will add pics IF I can recover them from my Windows 10 system that has just upgraded itself!!!!

Upgraded IC pump and original comparison. Lower cross member behind which
you have access to grill horizontal tabs that you need access to when removing
grill.

More pics. One showing modified hood latch with plastic handheld lever taken off.
First pic shows radiator with support frame/bar on bottom. 2nd shows bar on top.

The main difference is at the rear where the inlet and outlet pipes are positioned.

I chose the 2nd orientation which made it easier to route the hoses.

I also removed the bar as there was no room or need for it.

I added two 6" fans, pushers, since the additional radiator does block some airflow to the main radiators group.

The adjustable thermostat I added has its probe in the main radiator fins and is set to turn on at engine idle temperature.

The IC rads dont seem to reach as higher temperature as the main rad and I have no way of measuring temps while running hard. The IC rads cool down pretty quickly when you stop the car to get out and measure temps with an infra red gun.

The last pic shows a metal grid that I put in the bumper's lower opening to protect the transmission cooler radiator from stone hits.

In the 1st pic you can see the original thermostat probe in the top left hand corner of the radiator. It came with the twin fan kit and was a fixed temp device and was useless. Way too long especially for the main radiator which is rather narrow in cross section.

I am now on my 3rd thermostat which I am very pleased with.

Very interesting, thanks for posting.

Have you got a part number for the new I/C pump?

One issue I had with the installation of the larger sized pump, besides having to modify the holder, was the fact that it caused a sideways force on the bottom connection of the coolant tank.
The clipped norma connector I found would leak when it was not 100% in line with coolant male connector.
The only way round this for me was to use some gasket sealer which actually worked very well.

GT500 SHELBY 07-10 MUSTANG HEAT EXCHANGER INTERCOOLER ENGINE COOLER RADIATOR

The above Ebay item is the radiator I bought and adapted. Look it up on Ebay item number:222235576900
Cannot paste image here.

I cut most of the support frame off. I did however keep enough of the frame on the top sides of the radiator to bend into tabs
that I drilled to take bolts to fit holes in the existing radiator support at both top sides.

This is the hood release lever I had to remove in order to fit the Mustang IC radiator. It is still easy enough to open the hood release mechanism.

I remembered what you had said about this connector as I reinstalled my re-brushed stock auxiliary pump; It took several tries to get the connector's hose positioned on the pump to where the coolant tank bib would slip in. That spring clamp on the pump hose didn't help; it had to be released each time I moved the hose up and re-tried fitting the tank. It finally slipped in on about the fourth try and hopefully no gasket sealer will be required - time will tell.

Yes it was a real pita for me! Trying to get the two slots lined up either side of the male coupling with tabs on the male side of the coolant tank connector was not simple.
