Default Authorized Mod? and hidden switch?

2004 XJR that I've only had a short while. Under the hood, I find this:

Size: 40.2 KB

Didn't think much of it, til I found this:

Size: 41.2 KB

Of course, I had to flip it, ta see what the hell it did. That's when I felt the car raise up. Manual air suspension switch? Made the car go from here:

To here:

Now up until now, I had been driving it around with it in the down position, and every once in a while, the dreaded "Air Suspension Fault" message would pop up. Usually when I would take off before letting it warm up for a minute. Also, about 20-30 seconds after starting it, I get a little chime. Is that the "Your suspension is ready" notice? Or something completely different.

Bear with me. I'm still learing this thing.

Here is the J004 recall mod, damned if I know what the switch mod is for??it is not related to the J004 for sure, does not look factory for sure.

Emissions Recall J004

*** SUMMARY ***

April 17, 2009

Emissions Recall J004 - Revised On-Board Diagnostic System Software

Vehicles Affected:
2004-2005 S-Type and XJ
2004-2006 XK
2004-2007 X-Type

A concern has been identified with the emissions calibration for the vehicles identified above. The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System may not correctly detect tailpipe or evaporative emissions failures and provide the applicable warnings to the driver.

Jaguar is carrying out a voluntary recall of the vehicles listed above. Jaguar dealers will reconfigure the Engine Control Module (ECM) and, where appropriate, the Transmission Control Module (TCM). If your vehicle requires reconfiguration of the TCM, the transmission shift quality will improve over time as it adapts to your individual driving requirements.

For more information, contact 800-4JAGUAR (800-452-4827)

Does the car have a built in radar detector like a K40? They usually have a kill switch for states that prohibit radar detection devices. Or it could be some other aftermarket mod.

Maybe someone did install it as a rise up position for increased ground clearance when needed.

I think I read somewhere, (but can't remember !) that the car will detect a rough road and raise the suspension to provide extra ground clearance, but I may be wrong. What I do know is that I drove around a garden centre car park last year, (quite rough), and after parking and switching off, notice the car dropping down on the suspension about 1/2 " to where I would expect it to be normally.

Or maybe I am imagining it !! I shall have a look for a switch on my car now.

The only rough road detection that I can find is to do with the lowering it does at speed (lowers the car 15mm if running at >100mph for over 10 secs). If a rough road is detected in this mode it raises the car back to the standard running height:

Rough Road Detection
The ASM inhibits the speed lowering function when a rough road surface is detected; the vehicle is raised to the standard ride height to ensure passenger comfort.

Thats was for either rocket propelled grenades, or flame thrower, depending on option chosen. It was removed by previous mexican drug lord owner. Your glass is still bullet proof though

Hoping for the flame thrower option. Those RPG's are a bitch to find replacements for once ya use em. And Seattle traffic, I'd be going through a set a day.

The switch is definitely for the suspension. Just not sure why it was installed.

Still lookin for an answer to the "chime" about 30 seconds after I start the car.

Chainz,

Do you know much about the cars past life? Could it be that a previous owner was using the car at the drag strip or for red light street racing? The idea is that the car could be lowered at the flip of a switch for lower times and better launches.

Don't know much about the history of the car, but I doubt it was used for racing. I guess the po owned some publishing company, and had like 5 other Jags. Of course, that's just what the dealer told me, and we all know how reliable their word is.

I still occasionally get the "Air Suspension Fault", no matter which way the switch is.

So I'm guessing nobody knows what the chime is that comes on about 30 seconds after the car is started is supposed to signify?

I get a chime when ever any setting changes on the control panel. i.e. when the recirculation setting changes to outside air.
