Backup Clunk
All;
What could be the reason, when stopping after backing out of garage first thing of the day, there is a "clunk" as if there was something loose and then re-sets.
I was thinking that maybe it could be the rear brakes braking loose after the EMG brake releases.
What's your idea. Do you ever experience this?
Cheers

All:
I may need to add some more information.
The clunk is not when engaging the reverse gear, but only after I move the car out of the garage and apply the brake. The clunk is definitely from the rear wheels, not the drive shaft, flex joints or mounts.
I park the car, which is at normal operating temps and the EMG brake is automatically applied. Then the next day, while the car is more or less cold soaked, I start it up and back out of the garage. When I apply the brake to stop the rearward movement is when I get the clunk. Could it be that when I first put it in reverse and the EMG brake is automatically released, the rear pucks do not release until I apply the brake--thus the clunk? After that, I can back up a hundred times and get no clunk. Thus my stuck puck theory.
I'm open to other idea's..

I have the same thing happen in my car. Only happens when reversing after parking all day. Definitely from the rear suspension. I also assumed it was just the brakes, never been an issue worth fighting with for me.
mhamilton and others....
Agreed. I'll stick to my assumption about the EMG release and since it only happens on first start up, it isn't worth the trouble to chase it down. If I'm doing work back there I'll see what I can see then.

I was never bothered enough to try, but you can always park without using the parking brake and see if it still clunks. Just hold the parking brake release while you turn off and remove the ignition key. The brake won't apply. Then see what happens the next day.
