Boot Opening at Random
2004 XJ8 Sedan.
Boot opens randomly, just about 1/2", enough to register a "Boot Open" on the dash information. We close it manually only for it to open again either within a few seconds or a few minutes. SOMETIMES the boot remains closed but the info on dash says "Boot Open". We can't lock the car when this happens.
I've tried deactivating the entire electronic control of the boot by severing 3 wires leading to the latch with no success ... so I reattached them.

Welcome to the forum Frustrated,
I've moved your tech question from General Tech to the X350/X358 section where it should get a wider response from members with the same vehicle.
Hopefully it's a break in the boot harness and not a latch failure as regards cost to fix.

Most likely the latch itself is the problem here, the primary catch may not hold properly, but the secondary works.
There is one possibility that the greenish emergency release handle is positioned so the release cable is taught. That can make the latch release when not intended. See that the cable handle is pulled off the trim panel and push the little cable into the boot lid as far as you can. then reattach the handle to the trim. May help.
Cheers,

Thanks for the suggestions.
I've taken the lazy way out for now and as always it begins to work correctly after 2 or 3 weeks of misbehaving. So ... good for now ... until next time.
