Default Bushings!!

2005 XJ8-L, 60K miles. I need the rear control arm outer ball joint bushings and the front lower arm bushings. The Jag dealer is quoting almost $1000 EACH. Apparently you cannot get just the bushing from Jag, you ned to get the complete control arms. Anyone know where I can source only the bushings?

Thanks!

there is a place in the uk that does just the bushes, I think the reason jaguar do not do them seperatly is that they are worried thast someone may nt press them out carefully and could damage the aluminium arm itself, here is a link to the sticky thread
The definitive wishbone bush thread

Get the bushings from Gaudin Jaguar in Las Vegas for $34 each. Easy to change using a press with the right fixturing. They also have the arms for $500 but that is ridiculous when you can buy the bushings.

Here is a UK supplier of complete rear wishbones. £233 = $372. They ship internationally. There may be US suppliers too at similar prices.

Great care is needed when swapping out the bushes to avoid damaging the wishbone itself. Washing the arm over with boiling water will expand the aluminium and make the bush easier to replace. The two "ball-joint" types need to be a defined distance apart, (280 mm I think) but measure before pressing out the old bushes. The third, "silentbloc" type bush usually doesn't wear out, although no doubt it will eventually.

oldmots words are the key:

Easy to change using a press with the right fixturing.
If you haven't the right fixtures and facilities, dont try it. Many independent shops in the UK are now swapping bushes out, (my local shop who replaced my wishbones, now is), so there may be some in the USA doing so. Trouble is the USA is a very big place !!

Are the front bushings just as difficult to replace?

The way I see it, changing the bushes is worth the effort. Buying the factory press fixture from SPX Jaguar Tools (a great resource for Jaguar factory tools for DIY's) will cost about $50 and save $400 in just one arm. If you don't have a press, it is still cheaper to buy the press and give it away after than pay for new arms. I just hate being taken to the cleaners by the parts network.

Me too !! The Jaguar parts department price is outrageous, and I think they know this themselves. I have said this before, and I'll say it again. These things are made in their thousands, not by old cuckoo-clock craftsmen in huts in the Black Forest in their spare time, (probably smoking meerschaum pipes, too !!)

However, I don't think the aftermarket suppliers are ripping us off. Bear in mind the complete wishbone consists of the machined casting, two spherical joints and one silentboc type, all for £233, and a guarantee normally of 12 months. Swapping out the bushes at a shop will probable cost about 1/2 to 2/3rds of this, depending on labour rate. Yes, it's a saving.

I think you're being fed a load of ...
Bushings replacement is a common regular occurrence on my XJR. And I am complacent with that, given the outstanding ride quality of the car. I've always had the job done at my preferred Jaguar dealer and the job has never cost me anywhere near your quote.

Find an old english car mechanic in your neck of the woods with a press...
Be sure to get a 4 wheel alignment after the job.
Best of luck.

This bushings versus wishbone swapout argument will run and run. At the time I had my arms replaced at the independent near me, they had not started refurbing them. Now they have, I expect I would use their refurbed arms if the need arises again to reduce costs. However, in a very big place like the US, it could be difficult for some people to find a shop to swap over the bushes. In such cases, I would play safe and swap the arms, but using after market parts from Jaguar specialist suppliers.

DIY is not usually an option with these things, unless you have a fully equipped workshop with a press, although it is clear some people do have these things.

I might mention that a simple press will do this work. I have changed many control arm bushes, shock bushes, u-joints and so on. The fixturing is the issue. I don't even have a workshop, just a press standing in the garage and a small chest to work on top of. There is very little shade tree work I can't do. I do have a lot of hand tools that have been gathered over the years. I usually bought the tool instead of taking it to the shop. Have a lot of tools and saved a lot of money. The only thing I never got tools for was AC work.

As it turns out, the extended warranty will cover the front arm since Jag will only supply the complete unit. As for the rear, they aren't warn, just squeaking. My indy mechanic feels he can remove and grease them

Thanks for all the input

Default Front Lower Front Outer Bushings Part Number Needed

I've searched this thread and others, as well as the internet but can't find the answer. The front lower front control arm inner bushings on my 2006 S Type failed, causing premature tire wear on the inside edges of my tires. Instead of shelling out money for a new or rebuilt arm, I have undertaken a search for just the bushings, and have an Indie Mechanic who can press the old ones out and press the new ones in as has often been discussed. I found the inner bushings several places online (c2c39683b if anyone is looking) for $40-80. But I can't find either a part number or an apparent match for the outer bushings, which I'd like to replace at the same time while the arms are off. Does anyone have a part number for those bushings?
