Default Cooling fans

I have an my 04 Xjr, is it normal for the fan to being running on high speed for about five minutes even after shutting off the car. It does that in 70 degree weather and not driven hard. This is the second time it has done this since I have owned the car. Should I do a coolant flush will this help? The engine temp needle never goes over its normal location. Does anyone have any ideas?

From the age of your car and if you have no info from the previous owners maintenance schedule, I would flush it just for a piece of mind. That being said you could test the fluid. Auto zone or actually any parts store should have a tester.

For the fan I would say its normal for the fan to run a bit after the car has been shut off based upon previous experience with other cars.

As far as the temp. gauge, it's programed to stay pretty much in the middle. There is a wide range for normal operating temps and if you are with in the band the pointer will remain in the middle of the gauge. Climb outside of that range it shoots up rather quickly.

If you do a search for temp gauge you will find a bunch of threads that talk about this problem. I think I have seen a post or 2 about hacking into the system to force it to indicate like a mechanical gauge.

Update: I found this thread and it may be something you need to check! This forum is great!!!!

It is not normal. I suggest looking at the thermostat first as a possible culprit. It is good practice to replace thermostats around 60,000 miles. There is an auxillary coolant pump in the R models as well, be sure it's running. You could be running hot, just not enough to set off the coolant guage. Be sure the water pump is not leaking or damaged, they can lose their impellors which are plastic.
These guages are deceptive, you can be overheating and it won't show a high temp until it is critical.
