Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone had made their own mesh grill insert for their X350, as a sheet of a universal wire mesh sells for around $10-30USD, which is half the cost of pre-cut inserts.
Pictures, advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated, as I'm considering about "upgrading" my grill inserts, but I'm quite unsure between DIY-ing or buying pre-cut grill mesh.
Make an initial pattern out of newspaper or brown wrapping paper, tracing around the inside of the opening. Then transfer that to cardboard, and adjust it to fit properly. Then you can cut the mesh using the cardboard mock up. How is the mesh held to the radiator grille opening? You might have to fabricate some kind of border around the mesh to attach it. You could cut that out of sheet aluminum. This may look better than an after market unit or it may not. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. I made a custom mesh grille for my '70 Mustang in this manner.I had to build the supporting framework since my car came without any grille. It didn't turn out perfect but I've learned a lot since then.
