2004 XJR

What is behind the shiny metal rectangle in the trunk (Behind the carpet panels) that is lined up with the armrest in the rear seats? Is it just a panel to a passthrough? Is it something that could be cut out for audio purposes like a subwoofer?

I have not looked behind my carpet to see what is there but a ski hatch was an optional extra so I suspect that plate would be taken off and replaced by something else if you had the ski hatch.
