Found this behind the left hand trunk liner, resting on the fender pad right in front of the amplifier/CD-changer rack.

I couldn't figure out where it fell from and belongs, any idea what this is and where it goes?

Could that be a Parcel Shelf Vent Box, Part 4 in this diagram?




If so, the part number is HNA3718AB and it is part of the Air Distribution System (diagram is for the X308 but the X300 and XJ40 are similar):

That's got to be it! Now I just need to figure out where it clipped in and put it back... heh.

It must have fallen or gotten knocked off at some point.

Agree with Don. Here's a couple of pics from the archives that might help.

 

They are on either side behind the bumper. You can see them when the bumper is off which is painfully easy to remove.

The diagram and photos above show this part clipped up under the package shelf, and in the location I found it up on top of the fender inside the trunk, it could only have fallen down from somewhere like the package shelf not "up" from the bumper.

Perhaps we are talking about two different things? For example, I'm not talking about the two narrow vents that are in the trunk floor on either side of the trunk. Are those what you are referring to?
