Can anyone give me a solid answer. I have checked locally and get conflicting answers, I have a 1998 XJ8 and need to replace ECM, some say it has to be done by dealer only and requires programing(does that exclude me from buying used). Other shops tell me it is plug and play as long as numbers match. Don't know how to proceed! Thanks for any help.

 

I have an 04 xj8 the dealer told me the same thing. A big ticket item like that I would have a very reputable mechanic perform the work or the dealer you would want a warranty on the installation and part

 

You have posted in the section that covers XJ8's from 2003 on up. Try a run in the forum section that covers your car. We have a lot of been there done that folks here.
