thanks blj54, it's not actually leaking coolant anywhere - well, other than going into the engine apparently (head gasket).

Our F150 had white smoke and it was a blown head gasket. Huge job to replace, but when done a year ago vehicle runs fine.

I did not. I wasn't going to pay to have the engine broken down or tested fully, the economics made no sense. I'd inquire with the new owner, he was looking for a replacement engine.
