Default Fault Code P0831 Clutch Pedal Switch A Circuit Low

Good Evening All

I have found the threads very useful in the past, and now have a specific question hoping that you may be able to help.

I have a fault coode of P0831 (clutch pedal switch A circuit low). The cruise control won't work either so I assume these are linked.

Does anyone know where the switch is located and how to change it.

My car is a 2004 3.0 XJ6 Auto.

Many thanks to you all in advance.

Cheers

Andy

I'd have to confirm with the JTIS, but it could very well be the brake light switch, jaguar calls it a 'stop lamp switch', part no. C2C36874 ($30) and presumably mounted under the dash, just above the brake pedal on or near the firewall. However, I do not know this for sure...my xk8's switch was mounted there, so that is what I am referencing.

Many thanks for the reply, why do you suggest the brake light switch when the code indicates something different?

let me double check the JTIS for diagnostic tree for that fault, if it has ANYTHING to do with the transmission, then all previous statements should be disregarded. I jumped on the cruise control symptom as indicative to the brake pedal switch, thinking maybe jag got fancier with the name.

If you want, you can download your own version of the JTIS for your own reference. You'll find it in the FAQ thread in a few subforums, I know for sure in the xk8-xkr it has it.

Well, I'm stumped. There isn't a P0831 fault code for your 2004 XJ 6-cylinder.

Was the code taken from a dealer? Can you try another scanner?

The code appears in the X350 OBD document I have but what intrigues me is that the code is for clutch pedal travel and the OP has an auto!

Possible Causes:
Clutch cancel switch supply circuit: open circuit
Clutch cancel switch to ECM circuit: open circuit, high resistance
Clutch cancel switch failure

DTC Description:
Clutch cancel (top of travel) switch low voltage (switch normally closed)

I agree it is strange that the code relates to the clutch on an auto vehicle.

I can erase the fault and the check engine light will go out. Start the car in the morning and drive to work without the light coming on. Start car again to go home and within a mile check engine light back on again.

Do you think it may be the brake pedal switch, worth changing?

Cheers

Andy

I found one reference via a google search that recommended an ECM reprogramming/reflash. If you haven't had one performed at the dealer in a few years, more than likely there is an update that you might benefit from. At this point, I'd take it to the dealer for such an unusual, infrequent DTC.

I have just learnt something I have long suspected!

There are two brake switches!

One is called a brake cancel switch and the other is called a brake on/off switch! Just to confuse us!

Both are situated on the pedal and I think both must agree!

Hence try replacing each switch one by one, n'est pas?

'clutch"is a mistake.

Many thanks for that. Do you really think replacing the brake pedal switches will cure the problem?

Just been in touch with my local Jaguar dealership here, they have confirmed that both the brake pedal switches have been superseded due to faults. It is also thought that this could indeed be the fault I have, and they recomended both switches are replaced.

One switch is brake lights on & off, the other is cruise control.

They have ordered switches from Jaguar for me, both are a very good price at £14.10 each.

Will let you know if this cures the problems.
