This is from the mobil 1 Site and says you can use it in place,so I might give it a try.

The synthetic base oil enables excellent performance even in the severest of operating conditions. It offers outstanding gear shifting and power transfer performance versus conventional ATF fluids. The inherently high viscosity index and stability of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF help protect against thermal breakdown at high operating temperatures, while still providing outstanding performance at very low ambient temperatures.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF combines high-performance synthetic hydrocarbon base oils and a superior balanced additive system to provide significantly higher levels of performance above conventional fluids. This unique, advanced technology provides long drain capability, excellent friction retention, and low-temperature fluidity. Further, it helps to improve overall transmission durability and cleanliness. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is also compatible with conventional ATFs.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is formulated for use in most North American, European and Asian vehicles.
Approved for Allison C-4 applications

Exceeds JASO 1-A performance standard

* Not recommend for CVT applications, MerconŽ SP, Ford Type F
** Mobil DEXRON-VI ATF is recommended for 2006 and newer GM vehicles and improved performance in 2005 and earlier vehicles, wherever DEXRON is specified.

Automatic transmissions should be checked for proper fluid levels at regular intervals, and the fluid should be changed at manufacturer-recommended intervals. However, this may vary due to your vehicle's operating conditions. Some manufacturers recommend more frequent changes of transmission fluid under severe driving conditions, such as heavy traffic, hot weather and trailer pulling.

The ZF Lifeguard6 fluid is $17, I can't imagine using a substitute in this case. The last literature I read from ZF clearly states that there is no equal fluid. This old thread is full of guesswork and supposition, there is no longer need to wish, guess and hope, you can have the right stuff reasonably.

There is a new Febi- Bilstein oil that also meets the Shell M1375.4 spec for $11.

BMW ZF Automatic Transmission Fluid (1 Liter) 83222220445 (83-22-2-220-445)

They charge $22 for the ZF brand.

I had my transmission specialist do the service on the ZF in my car

He said he uses a ford product said the ZF stuff would probably last longer though but I get my transmissions serviced every 40,000 k,s regardless of what the dealer says
should be fine

On the other side of the coin I went with my wife's Jeep and used ATF fluid in the transfer case as this is what all the sites at the time recommended

The transfer case was destroyed after 60,000 k,s indie said he had never seen one gone like that the shafts have a Teflon coating looks like it got so hot the Teflon coating melted and blocked the oil gallery's hence new transfer case

Needless to say on the Jeep forum I am a senior member of the other guys using ATF fluid doing it themselves till I had that problem difference with the other guys they hadn't done the mileage I did in such a short time otherwise they probably would have had problems as well since then all oil sites now say refer to dealer for transfer case oil

Ever the inquisitive type we have now found out that Mobil make the original oil and Mobil call it 424

Moral of the storey if you are not sure even though the internet say yes

Do your home work

I don't know in other places in the world but its about 7 grand for a re-con ZF over here and only one company I would trust to do it that's why I get it serviced every 40,000 k,s

There is so much guesswork in this. I'll just use the Lifeguard and not risk it.

Good to know. I was going to do a complete flush when changing the filter until I saw the fluid cost, also considering I have to buy a new pan and sleeve too. ZF seems to only recommend the trans fill and not a flush anyway.

I did it recently, I used the company above for a 12 pack of the zf fluid and a sleeve. Got the pan/gasket on ebay.

I emptied the unit, then filled it up, then flushed the extra to get what was in the converter out.
