Default Handbrake Not Holding The Car

Hi All,
Just replaced the rear Brembo handbrake pads on my 04 XJR, recalibrated the system, but when applied the motor makes a 'pulling groan' but it does not hold the car.

it does work but has no power? Strange, is that before the new pads were installed it wasn't great but better than now?

Any suggestions.

The clue lies in the fact it wasn't great before the new pads went in. You might need a new actuator, but really first get it inspected to see what is going on, so you need the car up on a lift. This assumes your recalibration was done correctly for the Brembo setup. I don't think you should be getting any "groaning" noises at all. Of course it could just be the actuator cables need a lube.

Hi Frazer,
I have recalibrated it a few times all done to the letter from a TSB, but still the same, I'm not sure where to lube the cables?, Is the actuator unit sealed or does it come apart?
I assume the whole unit is a motor and a device to wind the cables..

hi Banjobill,

Yes you are correct it is a motor with an actuator and i have seen an exploded diagram of the actuator which looks a complicated little beast,

You may know that the unit is located above the rear axle in the wheelarch and can be a PITA to get to. The motor and actuator are one unit

Have you seen this TSB? JTB 00084
Electronic park brake diagnostics

Try rebooting the EPB module?

Pull the plug out of the module for 5 mins.

Hi All,
Had the parkbrake motor replaced yesterday, now works fine.
Hope it lasts another 9 years?

regards.
