Default Heated vs non-heated front windscreen - will the car notice?

Hi All,

My 2005 X350 XJR had a small crack in the windscreen. One cold night I put the heater on and "Crack!" suddenly the crack went a lot bigger.

I am now shopping around and it seems the aftermarket has non-heated windows only.

I don't really care for the heating because:
1) It's not so cold here in South Africa
2) I am one of those who can definitely see the wires, especially at night with oncoming traffic. It is so distracting that I avoid certain night trips in this car. I know some say they cannot notice it - to me it is very obvious. Was identical in my XJ8 and now my XJR (although I still don't know if perhaps both had aftermarket replacements)

My main concern now is: If I replace a heated front windscreen with a non-heated front windscreen - will the computer notice and flag a diagnostic code or error message , or will I just have a button that no longer does anything?

Thanks & Regards

What happens if you pull the fuse for it?

Dunno, I will check, but that might not trigger the same effect

All you are trying to find out "first" - fast, and cheaply - is if it triggers any response at all.

- If not, neither should the missing resistance of the heater.

- If so, you will need to edit off that feature in the CCF (as not all X350's had heating).
We DO appreciate it, here in Virginia, and mine comes on automagically when the temps are detected as appropriate, so the "editing" would be best. Not all scan tools can do the edit. Dam' few, actually. Might need a Dealer if not at least a better-equpped than average independent shop.

Adding a resistor to 'fool' it is not a very welcome option, as it consume power that has to be dealt with as waste heat "somewhere", and a motorcar engine is a rather expensive means per kWH, of generating electricity.

Besides... SA is already hot enough?

As I feared, F1 in the cabin fuse box carries a whole lot of other thingies, so pulling the fuse for the heated window is not a viable option

Not for daily-driver use, it is not. Seeing what Alarms it throws ... for ANY of that sub-circus ....could still be useful on-the-cheap?

Might get the new windscreen "soon" and access to a dealer-level Car Configuration File edit service only later?

So "good to know" if it merely throws a yellow light, or locks all four wheels, trips the Martin-Baker ejection seat, and heaves yer penurious azz out the sunroof at a Combat Speed ...just for denying it the right to a warm cuddle on a cold morning.... when it ain't even cold?

You'd have to know Jaguars and their kinkey-foolery ways? Or wimmin' and thermostats?

it doesn’t care. 99% sure the same relay is energized for the heated wiper park on non quickclear windshields

Given how many different makes, models, options and years they have to cover, all with no advance warning that a customer they haven't yet met had a disaster as wanted a particular glass, common ones needed often, less-common but once in many years, if EVER?

Perhaps only after visiting that marque's user 'forum' and asking if.....

Are you willing to have it shipped from another continent? (Europe, probably Poland where most of the sellers on Allegro are from)
https://allegro.pl/oferta/szyba-prze...09-10229810690
$380 ~ Ł310 ~ €360

I don't know how to switch that website to English, so here's a quick translate via Deepl.com:
New branded glass for:
Jaguar XJ YEAR 2005-2009
Complete with heater, mirror bracket, bottom rail and rain sensor
Buying a complete windshield will save you time and money
Product code: 2000010232642

Slightly icy glass (green, athermal)
Sold glass is acoustic (reducing noise inside)

Factory-fitted bottom rail (guaranteeing correct bottoming of the sub-glass)

New rear view mirror and sensor holder. Ensures a firm hold on the mirror and correct sensor seating

The glass has a heater including accessories for its connection.

Guy in "sewth effrica" might not WANT the heat.. just assurance lack of it won't create a problem.

But that sort of info can be useful to many others.

I have had superb service on goods from Poland - whether "Made In.." by highly skilled hands, or just sold-on by alert and competitive consolidators and expert shippers and packagers.

Often less risk of damage than ordering from within the USA. "Give a damn" is in shorter supply, stateside, lo these many years ... and worsening.
