Default Help with rear wheel bearings

I'm hearing a whining, singing noise that seems to be coming from the passenger rear. Sounds like a bearing. It's getting progressively louder and intensifies when turning slightly to the right (putting pressure on the left side of the vehicle) at speed. Diagnosis sound right or any other ideas about cause?

Regarding the wheel bearing, I've read the dts on the procedure, and I actually recently changed bearings on a Honda that required taking the knuckle off and pressing old bearings out and new bearings in. Is a customary hub puller or a specialized tool needed to removed the knuckle? And are the bearings pressed in?

Thanks.

Hi kbeachy,

Your sound could definitely be a wheel bearing.

The rear wheel bearings are pressed into the hub carrier (Part 2 below):

The front hubs/bearings are sealed units that bolt to the vertical link and are replaced as an assembly (Part 2 below):

Timken, SKF and Koyo are long-time Jaguar OEM bearing suppliers. (P.S. I've probably harped on you about this before, but if you'll add your car's year, model and engine to your signature line it helps others reply more accurately).

Cheers,

Don

Thanks, Don, that's very helpful. I put Timkens in my Honda and am favoring them for the Jag.

Way to go adding your car info to your signature!

Cheers,

It was the wheel bearing, then. Decided to have the shop do the job, even though I provided the Timken bearing and new lock ring. Charged an hour and a half labor, including pressing the bearing--$90 total. I was expecting to have to use a hub puller, but my mechanic said it just came off once the other parts were removed from the knuckle. Hmmm...

Hmmm indeed. I guess as long as they pressed in ok and no mention of any issues with the hub surface getting scored or damaged by the bearing race, you're fine. Wouldn't hurt to lift the car and check for play.
