Default How do I remove Gear Knob on this model?

Hi,

Am thinking of replacing the attached pictured gear knob with a new one or a wooden walnut one. I tried turning it and it does not budge. I checked for any visible screws and there are not any.

When I used to own an S-Type, it was simply a matter of turning the knob to unscrew and remove. Can't seem to do it with this model.

Might I not be turning it hard enough.... OR.... is there some sort of latch on the lever that has a hidden screw?

Thanks,

hay there this is from the UK site

Are you prepared to write-off the old gear knob?

Once it starts rotating on itself I think it's broken. I replaced my original Gear knob (half leather/chrome) with the all chrome version and just could not remove the old one. Eventually used brute force by pulling up hard while rotating the outer. The outer section came free leaving the metallic inner part still securely attached to the gear selector shaft. Basically the two components seperate and the gear knob outer will spin on itself forever.
Once the outer part is removed then use a good set of pliers or mole grips to unscrew the inner metal part from the selector shaft. Then simply fit the new gear knob.

I think the original must be fitted very tightly. When you begin rotating it to unscrew it as per the instructions the actual gear knob separates from the insert which secures to the selector shaft. Unfortunately the only way to overcome this was to pull the gear knob (outer) from the inner part and then remove that. No damage was done to the gear selector shaft and the new knob screwed on very easily.

There maybe a proper way but that is how I did mine. Spent two days attempting to get it off properly. Eventually used a little force and off it popped. If you want to repair the old (removed) knob apply some epoxy glue to the inside of the gear knob and re-insert the metal threaded part. Again a little force maybe required. It will all become clear once you have done it.

Thanks James,

Am going to take your advice and apply more brute force. Not too concerned if knob gets damaged, as I prefer the all wooden one's anyways.

Regards,

James,

Thinking about it more, am going to first contact my local Jaguar Service department and ask them for removal advice.

I'll confirm if they know before I try the brute force method.

Regards

How did you end up getting it off as I need to remove mine and the collar to replace the sports button selector panel with the illuminated digits as the S button is wearing and need it off to fit the new one.
Edit
Got the gearknob off but can't get the collar off...any ideas?

BuckMR2,

I was able to remove the knob by rotating it clockwise // then counter-clockwise for a number of times. It took me a while and my hands were very sore afterwards, but finely screwed off.

It appears that the knob on my model is not only screwed on but is also retained through some sort of lock-tite glue which is why it was probably so difficult to remove.

When I did remove, I looked closely at the top of the shift stem post and noticed that the top had a slight twist mark // probably a little bit of the stem went with the knob.

I was able to screw on the replacement Walnut knob without any issues.

It's not the knob its the metal collar under it at the top of the selector stick that from a distance the gearknob looks like it sits on
I have the knob off

The gear knob on the 2009 Super V8 Portfolio was unique to that trim package... the stem did not come with a collar.
