How are sport suspension shock absorbers marked?

Default How are sport suspension shock absorbers marked?

I'd like to ask if there is any way of identifying sport suspension shock absorbers vs comfort shock absorbers, preferably while still in the car. I ask this as my workshop has identified that I have one leaking shock in my 05 XJR, but they think that the current shocks are comfort shocks and not sport shocks. Unfortunately, as I'm not the first owner of the car I don't know if the shocks have been changed previously (although I don't believe that has been done previously).

Can the comfort shocks be swopped into an XJR and vice versa (e.g can the super V8 be fitted with sport shocks?)? Thanks

Well I have the sport tuned shocks, I used to have comfort ones though, I believe all the XJRs come with the sport tuned suspensions but it is possible to swap them with the comfort ones since both shocks are identical but the pressure levels are different. This is what I was told by my Jag technician friend but let's see if anyone else has an idea.

It is very stiff on bumps now, but also feels a bit better at high speed cornering.

Thanks. I've always wondered about my shocks as I've always felt that they were on the soft side (compared to a Benz) and definitely softer than the other Japanese sports / wagons that I've had for the past decade. Does anyone else know how to positively identify the sports shocks vs the comfort shocks?

Well if you dont have an XJR you dont have the sport shocks, and trust me , the previous owner didnt replace your shocks.

He did say he had an 05 XJR...

In the rest of the world there were sports models which had sports suspension as standard and you could also specify them as an option on pretty much all but the LWB cars.

I have the "Sport" model, (not exported to the US), and, Yes, good on cornering, but a harder ride than I initially expected. A combination of Sport shocks and large diameter wheels with very low-profile wheels, (like 20"), makes the ride very harsh, and was unacceptable to me after a couple of weeks, so I went to 18" wheels and car was transformed. Still good on corners, though !

I've had my R driven by a visiting UK Jaguar factory test driver during a Jaguar test day because of the relative "softness" that I've felt in my car and he did say that that there was nothing wrong and that is how they feel, so I suppose it's my history of coming from much firmer Japanese sports cars and sportswagons, and benz's that makes me feel that the XJR is on the soft side. I really cannot imagine, that if I already feel that the R is soft, what would the comfort suspension would be like...

I think the ultra low profile 20 inchers do make a significant difference. I've got the standard 19 inchers on mine.

And did you see me saying, he doesnt have an XJR? I said if you dont have the XJR you dont have the sport tuned suspensions unless you somehow got them optional, like I did, so that being said if you have the XJR you have the sport tuned suspensions. He was concerned that his shocks might be comfort ones since he doesnt think they are stiff enough, I really cant say anything about how his car feels unless I drive it but my jag feels pretty stiff on 19" 5 spoke rims with 255 kumhos

Confort shocks have a 1" diameter green dot on the black portion of the upper air spring can. Should be visible up inside the wheel well.the sport are red dotted

Thanks. I saw the green sticker dot on a comfort shock, but unfortunately I couldn't see any dot on mine. I managed to run the chassis number through the parts system and it did have the sports system fitted.
