Default hunted car problems

Most of the problems I am facing with my car are just unexplainable. I am the proud owner of a 2005 XJ6 (baught from Dubai) and lately shipped to Beirut, Lebanon. Befor shipping, I sent it to the dealer in Dubai who serviced it perfectly. Now I am facing 2 problems that I cannot explain:

1. The headlights are not switching on/off automatically when put on auto. And when switched to OFF they wont shut off, however when I switch to dim on, it switches off. If the gearbox is at Park the lights are off when under the sun switch on auto. But when gearbox is shifted to Drive the lights swich on again. Strange. Would I need to take to dealer or it is anything I can do ... (maybe reset battery).

2. The steering wheel is extremely soft. the dealer changed the 4 tyres and balanced it + allignement. I feel that when driving on a straight line the car does not respond left and right as accurate as it is supposed to.

On another level, I am shopping around to find 2008 body parts to upgrade the look of the car to a 2008 model. Will send pictures when done, meanwhile please tell me if I need church water.

The dealership or you have turned on the day time running lights. If you have a newer version of the NAV you can turn it off under the Menu button. I think it's user or system tab.

Daytime running lights are a nice safety feature. Not sure why they aren't required in the US!

Daytime running lights maybe a nice idea but you may want to think twice if you have HID lights due to reliability and expense of changing. I posted a thread asking about HID reliability and expense earlier

This is odd, as I find the car quite precise on its 18" wheels. Jaguar provide two settings, the Standard, and the Comfort settings. The latter will not be so precise, but remove any harshness feeling. My last Jaguar was a 1980 XJ6 Series 3, and this was definitely NOT precise until I changed the steering rack bushes to plastic, instead of rubber.

Maybe it's the roads where you are !!

Hey Fraser, The roads in Dubai is what you can imagine, asphalt on the desert, but yes I agree in Lebanon the roads are Hummer murderer. Anyhow, I just took back my car from a local balance and alignement mechanic who explained to me that a problem existed in the steering wheel pinion (that's what he call it probably French) and that these were all changed (rubber component abused by high temperature) and then he realigned the wheels and balanced them and canceled what he described as a steering wheel vaccum. Now the car drives like magic. I am happy with the results and it is back to being very precise and confortable all at the same time.

Just did that and all is back to normal. Now people don't salute me thinking I am blinking at them. Thanx a million Drew.

I don't know the exact layout of the X350 steering, but from what you say the mechanic did, there is some sort of rubber-based coupling between the steering column and the rack itself. This is not unusual, as such a coupling is there to prevent vibration and harshness being felt at the steering wheel. Clearly if the car was used in Dubai, it will have been suibject to very high ambient temperatures in summer, and this kind of thing plays havoc with all rubber-based parts. I see you had new tyres already. Other things that get ruined are any external rubbers like screen and door seals and so on. If the car was parked up all day in the sun in Dubai, it will not have done these things any good.

Temperatures in Lebanon will be a bit lower, although I believe politically it is quite hot !!

This is exactly the case. With 55 degrees in smmer all of its rubber components are dry and that is the case when the car is even in a covered parking. This weekend I would spray all rubber components with a silicon based lubricant and that will include the doors, window power machines, sun roof, hood pistons, etc ...

Obviously in Lebanon it is spring throughout the year although I am wondering how my car would look with an M60 out of the sunroof ...PEACE
