Default Jaguar Engine Temperature Sensor replacement

Hello all,

I am planning to change my Jag's engine coolant temperature sensor as I got the P0116 error code. Do you have any suggestions on how I can access this sensor and replace?

Jaguar XJ8L 2005

Thanks in advance.

Believe its on thermostat housing.
If so, it is included, with the thermostat & plastic housing unit.

The sensor is towards the front of the engine so access is good. Its a very simple remove and replace deal. You will lose coolant though, so have a catch pan and rags ready.

Thank you XJ8JR. So, I need to remove engine cover and its located just where the coolant pipes. Please check the attached reference picture with a red circle.

I can't recall the exact position. I think it may be a little to the right of the circle.

Replace the entire water outlet assembly as it includes a new thermostat and temperature sending unit. Be careful when removing the Torx bolts as they can sometimes strip.

The part number for the water outlet assembly is AJ811793. Be sure to refill with coolant meeting Jaguar specification WSS-M97B44-D. General Motors Dexcool and Ford Motorcraft coolants meet this specification, but always check the container to be sure.

Check the condition of the EGR feed hoses as the one that runs under the inlet manifold is prone to failure and can leave you stranded.

Thanks NBCat. I will check the thermostat assembly and EGR hoses when I replace this sensor.

Change the entire water outlet pipe as it can only withstand a finite number of cold to hot to cold cycles before failing and causing the engine to overheat.

I cannot measure how invaluable this forum has been to me in my eight years of Jaguar ownership across various years and models. But threads like this one are very concerning to me because of the false information presented as if it were fact. The coolant temperature sensor is located on the backside of the coolant thermostat housing and is not a threaded piece but rather a push-in type sensor with a retaining clip. At least on my 2007 VDP. Mine has just failed, and I’ve replaced it with an aftermarket part with no joy which has led to other problems.
The first sensor I ordered was incorrect due to bad fitment info and the aftermarket correct one does not work. I’ve now ordered a third sensor from a very reliable brand.
My point is, finding any information about this particular problem was difficult, due in part to posts like this one that have incorrect information.
