Default Just a warning

Last week I posted an add for a 2004-2009 XJ8 engine under cover, I was contacted by Asr5 by private message to contact claasified897@ outlook.com who he thought might have one. I sent the email and contacted a person by the name of David Lee who said he had one for x dollars shipped. He would only accept payment certain ways, and it had to be done NOW so he could ship. Once paid it took 2 days to ship, and in a different way then he said. He mailed it, and sent me a tracking number which turned out to be bogus. Instead of MA the package he sent is in Oregon. And instead of a large box its a priority envelope. Which if I'm correct there's no way in h#ll your going to fit an under cover in. Just want the community to be aware of scam artists in our midsts.

I do happen to know a guy Davey Johnson from europeanautomotivegroup.com phone is 800-761-3876. They have a good number of parts and if they don't have it, they will do a search and let you know if they can get it for you. I have purchased used air springs from them and they always shipped fast and packed everything well.

Yes, they are really bad on some other car forums that I frequent. They particularly prey on people who desperately need parts made out of the rare earth element unobtainium. I don't know about this forum's tactics, but on other forums they typically join the forum via tapatalk and make one post with two or three unintelligible words or a string of letters and numbers just to test the account and then never post anything again. If the moderators are paying attention, they'll delete the account right away, but sometimes they slip through. Then they watch for people to post wanted ads and respond. Often they reply with a message like you got which is a classic red flag. But I've even seen them scour the forum and the web and reply with an attachment of somebody else's photographs of the part being sought to make you believe they really have it.

The way to protect yourself is to check the join date and post count of the person replying. If they joined the forum after you posted your wanted ad, they are absolutely a scammer. If they've never, ever contributed any information of value to the forum or even asked a question, then just ignore them - its a scammer. If they have a few posts, then maybe they are legit, but read them. If the few posts sounds like the person is an asshat or some kind of idiot, then they probably are and its not worth the risk. We had an incident on another forum where a hacker used an account of someone who'd sold their car and stopped posting a decade ago to appear as if they were a legitimate seller so if the person responding hasn't been recently active on the forum, that should probably be a red flag too. If you've been looking for years, are really that desperate and the part is expensive enough that you can't afford to take that level of risk, you can also ask the person to just post the item on ebay with a "buy it now" option and you'll purchase through ebay so that you have some buyer protection.
