Default Left Rear Corner Too High

Thank you Don for comprehensive information posted in this thread as well as for all of the answers to all of the posts throughout the recent years I managed to see regarding air suspension.

I just want to ask two quick questions regarding air suspension however I really don't want to start yet another thread. My car is not sitting level - I have bought it literally two weeks ago and as far as I know rear driver side air strut was changed for used but working Bilstein. The result of this change is that rear left side is higher than all of the other corners. I called dealer regarding height calibration, they wanted to charge me ~200USD for the service, though they said that if there are some fault in the air suspensions there might be need for repairs. Other independent mechanic dealing with JLR said they might try with calibration however the results are somehow mediocre and suggested going with some "plates" to cheat height sensors about the height data. Another one I called said "calibration is impossible if only one strut has been changed, you have to change them in pairs - by the way I have Arnott's for rear so maybe you want to swap?". Jeeez...

So two questions:
1. Is it true (somehow I really doubt it is) that if one of the struts have been replaced it is impossible to perform height calibration service task in SDD?
2. If I don't manage to do it with any of these workshops, would I be just fine if I try to go with clone of Mongoose (such as one from britishdiagnostics)? I really wanted to acquire a proper cable but they seem to be unavailable (in Poland at least and to greater extent on any online listings I check within EU region). Would I be just find to run this calibration without power supply and clone cable or should I let go?

Take care!
Bart

Bart I do not pose as an expert and cannot answer your questions… I would first check to see if the add-on used unit it a “comfort” or “sport” unit… does that spec match all the others? I don’t have the lopsided pose but the “doggie down” yoga pose! Best to you.

Hi Bart,

I may move your post to start a new thread since your questions really are a different topic from the original intent of this thread and to help others find your topic with search engines.

To answer your first question, it should be possible to recalibrate your air suspension despite the single replaced air spring/damper, even it is a Sport and your originals are Comfort or vice versa. The Sport/Comfort designation has to do with the damper/shock absorber damping rate. The ride height has to do with air spring inflation. These are two separate systems. The Air Suspension Control Module (ASM) does not know the damping rate and doesn't care. It can only inflate or deflate the air spring until the ride height sensor gives it the signal it expects at the correct height.

During the calibration procedure, the engine is running and the air compressor runs repeatedly. You do not normally require an additional power supply for air suspension calibration.

I find that I usually have to run the calibration multiple times to get both front and both rear corners within a few millimeters of each other. And often I have to fool the ASM by reporting a corner's measurement from the wheel center to the fender/wing arch as being greater or less than the actual measurement to get the ASM to adjust that corner more than it wants to.

I don't have any experience with the British Diagnostics cable, but I did my first few calibrations with an early Mangoose clone with no problems, so it is very possible the British Diagnostics cable could work.

I don't know what version of SDD they are offering now, but for the X350/X358 I primarily use v.131.03 and v.134.

Cheers,

Don

Just to follow up, it occured to be just height adjustment error. After performing calibration procedure with the software at independent workshop, Jaguar is now level. Thanks!
