Default Thanks

Hey Danveenstra,

Thanks for reporting back. I've already replaced my upper wishbones recently so I don't think that's my problem but I hope that fixes your clunking for good!
Put a couple hundred miles on the xjr recently and the noise has gotten even louder so I'll be investigating today but I'm leaning towards the front lower arms as that is the most likely culprit considering I've just about replaced everything else haha, I'll be buying a set from BRUTAL if I discover that is my issue.
Thanks again

Any updates on this? I have identical symptoms. I have the car on the lift and used a 3 ft pry bar but see nothing suspicious. Only observation is that the front lower control arm, on both sides, has quite a bit of play when tugged/pulled with a pry bar. Not much force put on the pry bar but the whole wheel moves....

For now, I have the stabilizer bushings on order. I disconnected both end links and the bar seems to be tat loose. It hardly justifies the clunking noise but it is my starting point.

Be sure and check out the UK Jaguar forum as they have a great bushing thread. It's updated too so very worthwhile!

Discuss - The definitive wishbone bush thread

I don't see where you have changed the front or rear sway bar end links?

The fronts are well know to cause clunking and are very easy to check.

Remove the end that is attached to the front suspension and let it hang. Then drive around and see if the clunk is any different. Do the fronts first.

Hey Lagonia,

Sorry for the delay in response.... My XJR was totaled before I could sort out the clunk so I am sorry to say I wont be able to help you but based on your description it sounds like you need to replace those front lower arm bushings or arms

Thank you for your comments and sorry to hear of your loss. Are you working on a "new" cat acquisition?

I have read threads in this forum that suggest many have just replaced the bushings at a considerable savings. What suggestions do you all have. Complete replacement or just the bushings. It appears that removing the lower control arm is pretty straight forward without the need for special tools. This car is not a daily driver and can remain out of use for any period of time. Thanks.
Additional, in the past when repairing cars I have owned, I would check out a Chilton repair manual. Is there a repair manual which covers these XJ XJR models? Thanks again.

i was able to find OEM PART 277.00
saved my self the hassle of the bushing alone labor not to mention DIY if you dont have the pressure to replace bushing alome
