Question Mercon SP OR Liquid Gold? XJR

Heeeeeyy everybody, looking to do a transmission flush. Almost at 90k miles, I presume that it is the original fluid. Very very subtle lurk from 1st to 2nd, seems to only do it when babying the accelerator so it could be that.. If anything chalk it up to preventative maintenance.

I have read several gentlemen on this forum say " Mercon SP is the same fluid as LiquidGold6. "

Local tranny shop quoted 189$ for a 12qt flush of mystery oil, and that seems scary.

Should I replace the pan/filter while I am at it?? Wait till 150k?

So, Mercon SP or not? Save some money for sure

Do the pan/filter and most importantly the sleeve (seal for the electrical connector) at the same time.

I did mine at 95'000mi, and used ZF Lifeguard 6

$100 difference to use the genuine fluid, not a dealbreaker for me...

EDIT

Just FYI, here are the p/n for the various OEM fluids to suit the ZF 6HP transmission in 1L bottles

Jaguar #C2C8432
Land Rover #TYK500050
BMW #83220142516
ZF #S671090255

You will find the BMW stuff cheaper online if you search, like $23 a litre, also search by the ZF part number.

I vote for the Life Guard 6, as that's what I used. Definitely change pan/filter and sleeve. I first tried Mobil 1 because I read others had used it, and I added some Lucas stopslip. Not a good decision, later to find that I had changed the viscosity too much such that I got the RPM surge. Did a complete flush and replaced with all LG6, problem solved. It's such a key element of the trans and the whole car, that I don't think it's worth $100 to skimp on the original in this case.

Life guard 6 plus pan filter and the sleeve (cheap enough to get done while the pan is dropped).

I had some funky shifting issues and a few months back changed out my pan and fluid. I used the recommended low viscosity amsoil fluid as a replacement. Shifts like new now. Old fluid looked brand new but had 116,000 on it

Check this thread out. It is in the wrong forum but that is what I did to my car 11,000 miles ago.

Pan with filter replaced, 6qts of ZF oil, bolts upgraded + sleeve replaced

Tranny Fluid replacement

That is an awesome DIY thread! Fantastic job. I had the flush done today, got the sleeve and 12QTs from CTSC for like 250$ shipped, I forget exactly. Scored the pan on Ebay for around 70$, seems perfect, German made.

Unfortunately though the problem seems to have gotten a little worse (harder 1st-2nd). I am sending the fluid off to be tested on monday.

Reset adaptions and ensure the TCM software is to the latest level (mine was missing 4 updates!)

Yep, changing the fluid means the adaptations will be all wrong. It will eventually re-learn but clearing the adaptations and going through the proper re-learning procedure will help it.

And yeah, must have the latest software loaded, they did not release updates for no reason...

I was thinking the same exact thing Guys. Called Flow Jaguar in Greensboro they're doing the GM thing today, Lieth Jaguar in raleigh said 175$ to diagnostic and reflash, but zero guarantee it will resolve the issue. Worth a shot though.

Should I try to disconnect the battery? I don't think that will clear the TCM though will it.

Disconnecting the battery will have not effect on the TCM.

I think $175 is pretty reasonable to reflash the transmission AND do the adaption learning drive cycles. Better make sure that they will do both.

Pentosin ATF1-5L

Anybody had any experience with the above transmission oil?
O'Reily Autoparts states it is compatible with my car if that is anything to go by.

Well, had a pretty well reviewed indy do my TCM adaptation delete and software updates today, could not make it up to Jag today because we were expecting a few snowflakes to fall on the ground, and in North Carolina that means that the apocalypse is near and everything must close before cars start flying off the road like in a godzilla movie.

They had two S types in the shop so that made me feel a little better about visiting a shop I have never been too. Import Performance in Wilmington NC, foumd it using Jagshops.com.

All went good, no problems. I was behind on the software as we figured, I am behind on the other updates for ECU and such, we will leave that for another day.

156$ for the flash and update, and a AC system check which I failed... God Dam heater core.

Feller told me the car will shift like a drunken red head for a while. On the 60 odd mile drive home I noted 1-2nd felt slightly better than it did before I did the flush, and the other gear shifts are grabbed slightly harder. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I like to take off with the verosity of a 93 year old in typical driving conditions, so I wonder how much of all this 1st to 2nd wonkeyness is just me

Ahhhuhm, my reading comprehension skills failed me when I read this the first time.

Should I have asked them to complete my drive cycle for me?!?! Suddenly confused.

It would have been better if they did the drive cycle with the diagnostic system attached to the car to see that all the solenoids were cycled the required number of times... but it's not the end of the world.

Just means it'll take longer for the transmission to re-learn.
