We just purchased a 2007 XJR with 20" wheels. It needs some winter tires and the 20" ones are around $1300 for the set while 18 and 19" sets are roughly half. I've been trying to find the minimum wheel size that one can fit on the XJR with its 14" front rotors. Anyone know?

Thanx,

Chris

What do 20" all season tires have to do with my question? All seasons aren't snow tires.

Why would you drive your XJR in the snow sounds foolish to me. That's why I suggested All Season nobody drives their XJR in the snow we just don't do that around here.

I have 18" wheels on my 2005 Super V8 which has the Brembo brakes. I think they may have changed the brakes in 2006 but seems at least somewhat likely the clearance is similar.

I think the key is to find a wheel with the proper offset that is configured to clear the big brake calipers. My 18" winter wheels are the Jaguar "Tucana" that I think were one of the standard offerings on the VDP.

We have been driving our 98 XJ8 in the snow since we purchased it without issue. With a good set of snow tires it does rather well. The XJR is a replacement for the XJ8 as we already have a XKR, a XJ12C, and a XJ12 for nicer weather. Its not a convertible and its not rare so rust, stone chips, etc doesn't matter much.

I'm looking at stock wheels for this as I don't care for most aftermarket wheels and the ones I do like are $$$$. Cross refrencing rotor and caliper numbers isn't working as I can't find a site that actually has both years listed. However it does seem the rull of thumb is that 18s are the smallest size for brakes with 14" rotors, or rotor size + 4". But its not one of those try and see deals.

Silver Xj, I have been driving my XJR in winter for several years. You are correct, with 4 snow tires they do very well. Mine is older and has 18" stock wheels, so this may not work for you, but I went to a wheel shop for advice. They fitted me with some steel wheels from a BMW that would fit over the Brembos. I think they also did a small amount of machining for the hubs. I went with a 16" wheel for the winters, because I wanted to get away from low profile tires. I simply found some decent looking hubcaps to fit on the steel wheels. This may not be the best look, but it was less than $100.00 per wheel. If you are OK with that, you may be able to do the same in a bigger steel wheel. The extra profile also helps the ride immensely.

PS.. I recently replaced my timing chains. Are youthe author of the great write-up on that topic?
