Default Multimedia player - disc error

Hey,

I have a 2005 Super V8 with the multimedia setup but can't get it to play. Tried a few different DVDs, at least one of which I know plays fine on my home system and they all result in an error on the headrest screens: "disc error".

Currently the cd changer is not installed, not sure this would have any bearing but figured its worth mentioning. Is there any type of diagnostics I can do on the player or is this one of those rip it out and replace type problems.

Thanks for your help,
Mark

Had the car in the shop at the local Jag dealer for some unrelated work and asked them to have a look at the DVD player problem. They reported back that the DVD player was not working because the CD changer was not present. They siad it would be $1000 to get a new changer.

I have a few questions:

1. Does this diagnoses seem reasonable?

2. Is there any way to make the DVD player work without the changer installed, some sort of reprogramming possibly? I have no real desire to have a CD changer if its not necessary

3. Is $1000 really what it costs for this thing. I have not been able to find a used CD changer for a 2005 anywhere. The spoiled kids are the only people who will ever use the DVD player and while its nice to keep them occupied on long trips its not $1000 nice....

Thanks

There is a ring of optical wire running trough all AV electronic components in the car (CD Changer;DVD;Amp;etc.) If the link is broken (like a device is missing) - odd things happen.

For example I start the radio an hear no sound, otherwise it appear to work.

About the CD changer - you can get one form eBay for way less. Just make sure it's for 2004+ XJ, not earlier.

Also the error you see seems odd, "disk read error" could mean your DVD reader is broken and may or may not be related to the CD-Changer.

If you press the Phone and Menu button and hold them for a few seconds a diagnostic menu appears. Enter PIN 917, then selct "Self Test" - this runs some diagnostic routine and may display some error codes. Most of the time tough it does nothing - I had my optical link open just for kicks and it detected no codes. It's free to try tough.

Also your dealer can "bypass" the CD Changer in the optical link and see if that soves your DVD issue. I would do that before forking $1k.

I also own a 2005 super v8 , and had same problem as you. what it actually was is that the dvd player does not accept bootleg dvds only originals.
since then all*is ok.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies...

I agree that the "missing cd changer" diagnoses seems a bit unlikely to me. I would think if the changer was removed without any remdial action I would get some errors, especially when pushing the CDC button, which does nothing.

There is what looks to be a small optical patch cable where the changer should reside. Only guessing but it seems possible the changer stopped working and the previous car owner decided to forego replacement and had the patch cable installed and programming done to bypass.

If the wife ever comes back from the casino with my car I'll try a few more disks and the diagnostics. What's the world coming to if they are bootlegging Barney DVD's...

Does anyone know where I can find the correct part numbers for the changer and dvd player. I have been watching Ebay for replacements but it seems all the available options are for older models.

Thanks....

the system will work if you by a D2B cable for just what you have minus the cd changer.. which will put everything you have in a loop again... right now a missing changer .. means the fiber optic isnt connected.. so now you will need to purchase a
D2B (fiber optic Cable) and program the car to remove the cd changer electronically..
