Default Pinging/knocking under light throttle

Anyone else have this on their car? I get what SOUNDS like pinging/knocking under light throttle/acceleration. Very strange to me.

My air filter is dirty, so maybe if I replace it it will be better?

I get that sometimes also, though not much. premium fuel will help, and I notice its nonexistent when in sport mode. In normal mode, the car likes to shift early, putting the RPMs in a very low range for each gear, and it seems any quick throttle response can create the pinging. Just remember to either switch to normal on the highway, or use your cruise, otherwise the tranny will stay in 5th. (at least mine does)

This keeps coming up on 06/07s. I've posted this before but probably difficult to search. There are two TSBs for your problem that a reflash solves.

Will they do this if my car is out of warranty for free?

My guess is no, but maybe your dealership will be in the spirit of a giving mood. Afterall it's Christmas (oops, hope it's OK to say that). TSBs are seldom free out of warranty, usually only in the special case of a recall TSB. I've seen TSB work with customer charges even when in warranty such as the front end realignment specs on the X-Type. Anything older than 10K miles and the owner was charged for the realignment if they chose to have the TSB exercised.

How much would they charge for a reflash of the engine ECM? Also, with the same tool could they reflash my transmission? I am trying to kill two birds with one stone, and hoping I can get a discount/no extra charge by having the two reflashes done together.

Can't say what they'd charge because each dealer charges what they want, what traffic will bear. $150 to $250 seems to be the range for some reflashes. The time it takes varies too. You can call the dealer and ask for a quote, just use the TSB campaign reference when you call. Yes, they can do both reflashes with an IDS or SDD and the correct software.

Reflash is a moneymaker, but in defense of the dealership, they had to buy and maintain the expensive equipment that is fairly exclusive. I have the older factory WDS and believe me, even used and crappy, I couldn't provide cost free services.

Do you know what the TSB number might be for a TCM flash and also a transmission reflash (perhaps they are the same thing)?

I have probably 70+ TSBs for the X350, lots of which are reflashes for various things. I probably have 3/4 just for transmission reflashes. TSBs usually address year/sypmtoms specific, their often not just generic. What flashes are you looking for on the trans? What symptoms? I'm not sure I'd be able to readily find it as I don't have an easy way to search through a list this long.

Steve, if you ever want to have the entire list on the jag servers for sending members to, we are building a mediafire account for all model documents. If you zip them up and send it my way, I'll upload it and you can point people that way if they want to look at all TSBs. I don't think its searchable however.

While tsb's are differant for differant problems, the reflash is not. Its the latest and greatest software revisions. Also alot of the trans faults lie in adaptive learning strategies drifting. The car does learn how you drive and its used to adapt to not only you, but to comphensate for changes in the performance of the engine and trans over time. So on a trans reflash, its clears adaptation out of the tcm(so drive gingerly for a coule hundred miles and do not use sport mode) and uploads the newest software revisions. A tcm reflash takes longer and is harder, also on most cars it will not let you in to reflashif the temp is too high per the parameters. So expect to wait awhile for your car to cool, or leave it overnight

Well, as some people noted, putting it in sport mode seems to get rid of the sound. Also seemed to fix my tranny clunk. For $300+, I think I'll just keep using my sport mode. I may burn more gas, but it will take me years to reach an extra $300 of gas cost!

Oh, I'm saying I will just forgo any TCM/ECM reflash (which may cost $300+) and just live with the car by driving it in sport mode all the time.

I pretty much stay in sport mode all of the time. What are the advantages to taking it out of sport mode?

I'm just glad the car doesn't switch off sport mode when you shut the car off. That way I don't have to remember to click it back on!

I like the sport mode so I leave it selected all the time. When not in sport mode it does not have that "snap your head back" feeling that I love so much...lol

Well, I went ahead and replaced the air filter. So far, no more pinging/knocking. I guess it doesn't need a reflash. I will see if my MPGs are any different on the commute home today.

I like sport mode, but when I'm not in a rush, regular mode seems just fine. It seems to shift less, relying on the engine's torque rather than altering gear ratios! I like that in a big luxobarge!
