Default New to Jaguar XJ8, ex Mercedes owner. Issues

Hello everybody:

I just bought a 2004 XJ8 base, 65xxx miles, 11.5k. One lady owner, all the records, all schedule maintenance done at the dealer. However it has some issues:

- When in iddle with transmission in Drive you can feel a vibration. When in Park it stops.

- After taking the car to the dealer to change the oil it came back with a low frecuency noise in the front tires, could be the bearings because it is increased when stopping and left turns.

- Radio doesnīt tune any station.

- As a car nut I asked the dealer representative to change the transmission oil. The guy told me to forget it because transmission are sealed. How can this be possible.

If you can help me with the solutions of these small issues or inform me about a good Jaguar mechanic in South Florida it will let me full enjoy this beautyful machine. I had own many Mercedes Benz, mostly E and S, and let me tell you, I regret now not owning a Jaguar earlier.

Theres some usefull links for the transmission, the vibration a fluid change will help. It all but eliminated my vibration.

Thank you StrateLoss. Iīll try to find a mechanic who can do the transmission oil change, Castrol is a good choice. The car has an almost new set of Pirelli P6, they should be called Pirelli P.o.S. They are too noisy. I really like this car, driving it is like be flying a Spitfire over the skies of London.

yes I have those tires too. they are kind of noisy, but hey they came with the car and have plenty of tread. so no sense in buying a new set untill they wear.

With your milage and service history I would not worry about xmission fluid change for some time. Follow the owners man, get familiar with the car, read the posts here for a few months. As wonderfull as these cars are "if it aint broke don't fix it" applies in spades. Take it from a guy who has owned 5.

You should replace your brake fluid if nothing else. Check your service records, it should be done every 5 years.

Tarhealcracker the dealer just replaced brake fluid. My biggest worry about this lovely car is the low frecuency noise in the front wheels.

Can be the brake pads sticking to warped rotors, at least thats what it is on my car.

MBJAG

These cars are very sensitive to tire type, brand, road surface, ware and balancing. For instance, Pirellis have a rep for noise as they ware. Mine will be wisper quiet on some road surfaces but raise hell on others. Try rotating the tires and see what you get. Wheel balancing should be "road force balancing" Wheel bearing issues should be easy to diagnose but with your mileage it's not likely the problem. You do have OEM tires and matched pairs on the car?

StrateLoss, the rotors doesnīt seem or feel warped, but I will check again. Tarhealcracker, the car has an almost brand new set of Pirelli P6, they are noisy compared with the Michelin Pilots I have in my E500. I will rotate the tires, balance seems to be ok. Besides that noise and the transmission vibration (really small vibration) when in idle, this car is a beautyful well engineered machine, I now regret not to had buyed a XJ8 earlier. Iīm thinking about keeping it for many years in my garage. With the new trend in Jaguar design, this generation will be the last of the classics.

Pirelli's are notorious for noise. I am quite happy with the stock Conti's that came with my car. I plan to keep with them.

I will put about 5000 miles on these P6s and make a choice between Contis or Michelins.

The "rest of the story" on Pirellis is that while they may be noisy, when you are out on the edge of the performance envelope you will be glad you got em. Hard turns and braking with reasonable ride quality is Pirelli's strong suit. Like a lot of things, however, I wish they were cheeper & I wish I was 30 years younger too.

I know someone who bought P Zero's off of Tirerack and two developed bubbles on the side wall within a month of mounting them.

A Jag or any convertible should have quiet tires.

Actually, it's most likely that your rotors have deposits of melted pad material on them, the rotors will not be warped. Cheap brake pads overheat and deposit metallic materials on the rotors, creating lumps on the rotors that cause pedal pulsing upon brake application. This stuff is invisible since it's metallic just like the rotor. I suggest having the rotors ground to clear the crud off them or replace them and get some high quality pads.

yes rotor and pad replacement is definately due, mine are definately warped bad to a point I can feel all the waves with my finger.

The car have OEM brake pads, changed at the local dealer by previous owner. I have the record. They were changed in 04/2009. I donīt feel any pedal pulsation while braking. Itīs a low frecuency noise, more noticeable when braking and turning left.
