Default New to Me Car and First Problem

So about two months ago I purchased a 2009 Jaguar XJ Portfolio , essentially to spoil myself, needless to say its a second car to keep a smile on my face.

The other day I was heading down the highway at around 110Km/h and I suddenly lost all power , luckly there was a gap that I could get over to the hard shoulder without to much disruption to traffic, stopped the car and she was still running ok, reved her up a little and all was good. I proceeded to move forward on the hard shoulder then took the next exit. This was good for about 1/2 Km and then she died again . This time she would not move and then finally the engine cut off.

Stated her up again but would not rev higher than ideal, then finally cut off again. The fuel cage was reading a 1/4 tank though the symptoms suggested I had no fuel. As I had been taking her out periodically I was not sure of the millage from last fill up (had not rest the counter).

With no trust in the cage I decided to walk to the petrol station, about 3 km away and try some petrol before expensive recovery costs. Luckily for me a nice gentlemen stopped to help and gave me a lift to and from the station.

Stuck in 5 liters of petrol and after another start-up she reved a little lumpy for a few seconds then was well again, drove to station filled her up and she has been fine since (took her to work to check, around 400km).

So I suspect the fuel cage is faulty, need to send her in for a service next month so will get them to check it out then, The cage moves up and down ok, think it may not go below 1/4 tank, that was the first time I had let it go that low, but on recall I don't remember it ever going below a 1/4 tank so think it might be getting stuck. Anyone else had any problems with the fuel cages on the XJ (X358).

Thanks....

P.S sorry for the long winded approach but though I would share the experience.

Hi Scotty

This is not a common fault but one or two people have suffered incorrect fuel gauge readings, so have a search on the forum.

Does it act seemingly correctly at all times, like dropping back to zero on shut-down, and moving up to a reading when you switch on the engine ?
