Default Tire talk

1998 VDP, it's time for tires!

I'm looking at Kumho and Hankook Evo v12s.

Here's my question, when/why fill with nitrogen? I'min Los Angeles, it can get pretty warm, I often travel to Palm Springs, (118 on the last trip!).

But... no snow or real cold...

Would love to hear all thoughts.... I've read through the other threads, but am curious about nitro. Is this something I can ask for at the service station where I get my work done or do I need to go to any tire place and ask?

thanks,

Default Nitrogen

Hi Jo,
From what I understand, the benefit to put nitrogen alone instead of air (a mixture of basically 1/5 oxygen and 4/5 nitrogen) is that nitrogen does not diffuse through the rubber of the tyre. Time passing and high temperatures helping, oxygen escapes and the pressure falls down (could loose 20% at the extreme). If only nitrogen, pressure remains stable, of course if no leaks!

From what I read it's a waste. Nitorgen is more to keep the tires at the right pressure linger as the molecules don't go through the tire as oxygen does...

Nitrogen fill will keep the pressure more stable at higher temps as it does not expan at the same rate as air.

It only really matters for racing, dont bother for the street

Cheers

If it free then do it, but don't pay extra for it.

I use it in my motorbikes after the third top up the tyre pressures can stay the same for months where as when I used to just use air the tyres they would be down after 2 weeks

I haven't used it in my cars because I check my tyres weekly because they have TPMS monitoring systems which are more trouble then they are worth but that's another storey LOL

The air we breath is about 80% nitrogen, why pay for 20% of it??? not necessary, more of a money making scam for dealers...
