Odd sound coming from my XJ8
There is a low moan/whine coming from my car. This sound also increases and decreases in pitch as the RPMs increase and decrease. Past experience tells me this is the sound a transmission makes when it is not working at optimal condition. However, if I turn off the climate control, the sound goes away completely, and the car becomes very quiet. Would anyone out there in the forum have an idea what this may be?
I had this but then I stopped giving my wife a lift and it stopped.
I concur with Wingrider that it could be the A/C compressor.
Try something else to be sure: keep the climate control on and turn off only the A/C. If the whining disappears, I would really say that it is the compressor. Maybe a recharge can then solve your problem,as compressors can get noisy if the refrigerant is too low. If the whining persists, it could also be the fan of the climate control. The noise then should come from above the glove compartment.
Best regards,
Thomas
